Le grand auteur de théâtre s'est beaucoup moqué des défauts humains. Ainsi, dans "Tartuffe", il critique avec dureté l'hypocrisie religieuse. Le terme de "tartuffe" est d'ailleurs devenu un nom commun ("quel tartuffe!"). Dans "l'Avare", Molière se moque, bien évidemment, de l'avarice terrible du personnage d'Harpagon, lui aussi devenu un nom commun: "c'est un harpagon!" (voir unité 19, p. 155)
