The history

The year was 1605 and some English Catholics were angry because the King of England, James the first, was treating them badly. In November 1605 a group of men made a plan to blow up the Houses of Parliament (the government buildings) in London. An enormous explosion was planned for November 5th. The plan is known as the ‘Gunpowder Plot’ and the leader of the group was called Guy Fawkes. The men put 36 barrels of gunpowder in the Houses of Parliament and they waited for the King to arrive. The group decided that Guy Fawkes should light the gunpowder and cause the explosion. Did they succeed? No, they didn’t. The police found the gunpowder before it exploded and they caught all the men involved in the plot. The men were tortured and killed. To celebrate his survival, King James ordered the people of England to have a bonfire on the night of November 5th.
Bonfires, Guys and fireworks
On November 5th people remember the plot to blow up the Houses of Parliament by celebrating ‘Bonfire Night’. All over Britain there are firework displays and bonfires with effigies of Guy Fawkes, which are burned on the fire. The effigy, a reminder of Guy Fawkes, is made of old clothes usually filled with newspaper. The fireworks are a reminder of the gunpowder that Guy Fawkes hid in the cellar of Parliament. Some people have a small bonfire in their garden on November 5th. In main towns and cities there are big bonfires and firework displays.

Food

It’s normally quite cold in November in Britain, so on Bonfire Night people wear hats, scarves and gloves to spend the evening outside. They need some warm food too. Traditional Bonfire Night food is hot baked potatoes. The potatoes are cooked on the bonfire and filled with butter and cheese. There are also toffee apples (apples on a stick, covered in sweet toffee).

Guy Fawkes Night is a very British celebration. It celebrates a failed attempt to blow up the Houses of Parliament (that’s where Big Ben is) in London. This was probably one of the first examples of terrorism, only it didn’t work. In 1605, a group of Catholics who were unhappy with their Protestant rulers wanted to bring the government down. Their leader was a man called Guy Fawkes and his plan was called the Gunpowder Plot. Fortunately, Guy Fawkes was arrested. He was put on a bonfire and burned to death. In Britain, this day is also called Bonfire Night.
Bonfire Night is perhaps the biggest outdoor celebration in Britain. You have to brave the cold, but it is a happy occasion. Every town puts on a fireworks display. There is usually a large bonfire in the middle of the town. People gather at it to watch the fireworks and eat traditional Guy Fawkes Night food. Baked potatoes and toffee apples are the most popular treats. There is usually a ragdoll on the bonfire to represent the real man who died 400 years ago. Many families have smaller celebrations and will have their own, private fireworks display in their garden. There are many warnings to be careful because every year, children are injured in fireworks accidents.

The first use of atomic weapons in 1945 in World War II ushered in the Atomic Age. The post-war American populace was gripped by fear of the atom's power. In those troubled times, it was thought that nuclear power generation could restore the image of the atom and ease the people's fears so that the nation could continue stockpiling nuclear weapons. That's why in 1953, the US announced an "Atoms for Peace" program proposing construction of nuclear power plants, not so much to develop a source of energy, rather for its symbolic value. The program promoted the use of nuclear power not just domestically, but also internationally, and power plants were constructed all over the world. In other words, more than an energy policy, this was a military foreign policy, of a type called a "Psychological Operation" or "PsyOps". Showing benign nuclear power plants, rather than frightening nuclear weapons, unconsciously reminds the world of the US nuclear capability, leading them to be scared and submissive.
