THE HANA MONTHLY
Hana Middle School English Newspaper Wednesday March 5, 2003
Message from the Principal
It's been a busy month. New students and teachers have joined the Hana family. Those little boys and girls who first walked through the school gate last year have now become second-year students. Those who were second-year students, then, have started the late year of their middle school life as seniors. Teachers have taken on new classes.
Throughout this busy time and these changes, we have always done a good job, thanks to help from each of you, students, parents, and teachers. There is nothing special about the changes that are taking place this spring. So, let's do it right again this year.
We all know that spring is when everything gets started. New leaves come out. Animals wake up and begin to move around. What does that mean for us? I guess nature always teaches us a lesson. The lesson I have learned from this spring is that Hana should move forward, and that Hana students should keep up the good work. That way, we can all be successful. Thank you.
Lee Dong-Su
Principal

The House on Maple Street
Dr. Fleinenstein lived alone in his 1800s style house on Maple Street.
Every day, he would get up very early for work. He worked alone in his house in the attic. He almost never stepped outside, only to get his paper and mail. Many neighbors wondered about him. Some didn't even know his name. His latest top-secret invention was building a house rocket. What is a house rocket, you might ask? Dr. Fleinenstein would describe it as "The new way to outer space!" The doctor had many ideas, some were useless once built, but some were helpful in everyday life. One of his past inventions involved motor and metal hands, which he used to help him with building his inventions.
His new invention was all about getting to space. Dr.Fleinenstein always had a thing for the universe. His house was mostly decorated of space pictures of the earth and many of the planets. His theory was to make some kind of rocket in his basement of the house, strong enough to lift off the ground and into space.
On a bright Saturday morning, Dr. Fleinenstein got up and did the usual, a cup of tea, eggs, and bacon. Then, he went off to his office in the attic. His office consisted of old antiques and small gadgets. One of his most prized possessions was kept in a wooden chamber in his office. He took it out rarely, just long enough for him to clean it. But nobody knew what this thing was.
As Dr.Fleinenstein turned on the lamp, he started drawing many shapes and numbers. Once he had an idea, it must be put on paper, or else the idea wouldn't exist. Once he had all his ideas down, he started off to the basement where all the tools were held. Back and forth he went, until finally he had all his tools. Since the rocket would be underneath the house, Dr. Fleinenstein went to the basement to work.
It has been a while since anyone stepped foot in the bottom story of the house, so most of it was filled with cobwebs and boxes. Dr.Fleinenstein got straight to work. He measured and cut every piece of metal to its needed shape.
Weeks later, Dr.Fleinenstein had finished his most possessed project. It was 11:30 PM, and he was getting ready for lift-off.
Dr.Fleinenstein strapped himself in. he clicked off all the buttons, and soon after, lift-off began. "It was the perfect lift-off."
He saw many things, from the planets to shooting stars. According to his calculations, it would take about 10 hours to get to the nearest planet. Finally he got to the planets atmosphere. The name was planet Unknown. As soon as he landed, he got out and saw many great things. He thought to himself, "Wow! I made it!" He took many samples of dirt and rocks. As he was searching for intelligent life, he stumbled upon a Wallabeast. "Whats a Wallabeast?" he wondered. As he got out his notebook, to take notes, he suddenly thought, "How in the universe am I gonna get home?"

During the Middle Ages, gravlax was made by fishermen, who salted the salmon and lightly fermented it by burying it in the sand above the high-tide line. The word gravlax comes from the Scandinavian word grav, which literally means "grave" (in Swedish, Norwegian and Danish), and lax (or laks), which means "salmon", thus gravlax means "buried salmon".

A SQUIRREL WITH FRECKLES
There is a squirrel. Her name is Vera. She is a very tiny squirrel. She lives under the bridge.
She has a problem. She is very lonely and doesn’t have friends. She doesn’t have friends because her classmates make fun of her. They tease her all the time because she has freckles. She needs to get rid of her freckles because everybody makes fun of her.
She decides to go to Warsaw, to visit a plastic surgeon. She goes to Warsaw and asks him: “Could you help me to eliminate my freckles”? He looks at her freckles and says” you don’t need this, you are a very beautiful squirrel. They suit you. This is a ridiculous problem.”
But Vera the squirrel is very disappointed. And she decides to go to another doctor, in Prague. With the plastic surgeon in Prague she has a very long and interesting conversation. She likes him. He likes her. They like each other. And the plastic surgeon tells her: “appearance doesn’t matter much. The best way to stop your classmates from making fun is simply to ignore them. If you want, I can be your friend.”
So the squirrel makes a new friend. He is her doctor. Now he is her best friend. She finally succeeds in making friends. And she takes it easy.

Semi-dried Fish(December 12,2013)
This is the Guamegi(과메기) that we ate this evening with some acquaintances. Guamegi(과메기) can be explained as a semi-dried fish. If it's your first time eating it, maybe it is unfamiliar to you.
However it's a very delicious and nutritious seafood.
We eat it by wrapping it with seaweed and various kinds of vegetables which gives various vitamins and minerals.

A taboo is a vehement prohibition of an action based on the belief that such behavior is either too sacred or too accursed for ordinary individuals to undertake, under threat of supernatural punishment. Such prohibitions are present in virtually all societies. The word has been somewhat expanded in the social sciences to mean strong prohibitions relating to any area of human activity or custom that is sacred or forbidden based on moral judgment and religious beliefs. [citation needed] "Breaking a taboo" is usually considered objectionable by society in general, not merely a subset of a culture.
