Melissa Ashes, the famous Hollywood actress, was found dead this morning in her study. Her body was lying on the floor. She was shot in the head. A gun was found next to the corpse, and there were several footprints on the floor. The footprints are those of a man or a tall woman. The room was messy. Sheets of paper were scattered everywhere. Mrs. Ashes was probably reading or memorizing her new role when her aggressor attacked her. A plant was tipped over and a lamp was broken, so the victim may have fought with the aggressor.

The crime was committed early this morning. No window was broken, and no door was forced open, so the room was not broken into. Apparently the murderer was already in the house. I guess that Mrs. Ashes knew the person who killed her.

It can't be a suicide. The safe was open, which means that the victim may have been killed for her money and her jewels. Mrs. Ashes must have been forced to open the safe. I will have the gun and the footprints analysed at the lab, and we'll see if any traces, fingerprints, or clues can be found here and there; I may find the killer's DNA.

Everyone loves California. The state has given us dancing raisins, the Beach Boys and mass-produced Sriracha sauce. So why stop at one California when you can have six?

So goes the thinking of Silicon Valley millionaire Timothy Draper, who announced on Monday that he has collected enough signatures to place his "Six Californias" initiative on the 2016 November election ballot.

Over the past few months, Mr Draper has spent over $2m (£1.17m) of his own money to promote the bill, hoping to convince enough voters to make his secessionist dream a reality.

Should the drive succeed, California would be broken up into six new states, each with its own governor, legislature, congressional representation and votes in the electoral college to determine the US president. Mr Draper would then become a resident of the state of Silicon Valley, which would become the wealthiest in the nation.

The plan has a long way to go before becoming a reality. If Mr Draper has indeed collected enough signatures and the measure passes in November 2016, an approval by the US Congress would still be necessary. Then the complex, contentious break-up process begins in earnest.

Over sixty people were evacuated from the village of Chulmleigh in Devon last night when their homes were flooded . Many homes were damaged and all roads to the village were closed. There was so much water in some places that tens of people were rescued by boat. Most people from the village were taken to Tiverton and spent the night in a social centre.

Dark L is the version of the /l/ consonant that most English speakers use at the ends of syllables, after a vowel, as in tile, hull, school. Depending on your accent, you may have a different kind of /l/ sound in other settings. Usually initial L, as in light, lovely, luscious, is said with the opposite L, that is the Light L. Perhaps you can hear the difference between these initial-light and final-dark pairs: lie—aisle/I’ll, lee—eel, lay—ail, low—ole, law—awl, allow—owl.
Light L is spoken with the centre of the front tip of the tongue behind the upper front teeth on the gum ridge. The sides of the tongue do not touch the side teeth. To feel this side space, make an /l/ sound shape with your tongue and then inhale through the shape. You should feel coolness on the sides of your tongue. If you were to say a series of “la, la, la’s”, your tongue should rise up to the gum ridge and back down in a nice flapping kind of motion.
Dark L is also spoken with the centre of the front tip of the tongue behind the upper front teeth on the gum ridge, however, the back of the tongue also rises up toward the soft palate, also known as the velum. To feel this, say a word like awl. You should be able to hear the “darkening effect” of the rise of the back of the tongue toward the soft palate, which traps the sound further back in the mouth. In some ways it is as if you were saying the /ʊ/; vowel of a word like pull at the same time as you were making the dark L. The IPA symbol for the dark L is either a lower case L with a tilde through it, ɫ —the far more common way of transcribing it—or a lower case L with a superscript velarization diactric after it, which looks like a tiny Greek gamma character, lˠ .
