Some of my friends call me a wimp because I am afraid of so many things. I am frightened by spiders, and I feel scared when I walk into a dark room. I am afraid of meeting new people, too. I am just a fearful person.

Some things make me more than frightened. When I look down drom the top of a very tall building, I am scared stiff. I am horrified by being alone. I never go to horro movies because I am terrified by them. When I saw "Bride of Frankenstein," I was absolutely petrified. I got sick to my stomach and couldn't sleep that night.

It's no fun being a wimp. I wonder if I'll ever change.

Are animals smart or dumb? What about computers? Are they intelligent or unintelligent? If a person has a small brain, is that person slow? The answers to these questions might surprise you.

Washoe is a female chimpanzee. Her trainers think she is bright. They trained her to communicate with humans using sign language, the language used by deaf people. She can talk by using 130 signs. Her trainers say she is clever enough to creat new signs.

On the other hand, people who work with computers say that some of today's machines are stupid. The current generation of computers cannot think. They cannot make brilliant decisions by themselves. But computer scientists are working on new computers that use artificial intelligence. These computers won't be as dense as those we use now. They will be able to think more like the human brain. Today we say that a person who is intelligent and knows many things is wise. Someday soon we may talk about those wise computers!

A university professor in England discovered that brain size is not related to intelligence. He examined a student who had a very small brain. He expected this student to be slow and thick. But the student was actually sharp and quick. Tests showed that he had an IQ of 126, which is more average. He wasn't brilliant, but he was more than smart. The professor found several hundred people who have very small brains but are intelligent.

Stephen Richardson, a social psichologist, studies the lifestyles of young people in Britain and the USA. He says that today many young people live at home when they are 25 or more. They are happy to live with their parents, go out at night, and spend their money on mobile phones and designer clothes. It's not only university students, but also young people who have jobs and earn money.
In many other European countries children leave home later. In Italy, for example, 30% of men and 18% women between 30 and 34 live with their parents. This week in Naples a judge decided that Giuseppe Andreoli, aged 70, must pay €750 a month to his ex-wife for their son Marco. Marco lives with his mother, but he's not a child, hi's a 30-year-old lawyer!

The similarities between HTML 4.01 and XHTML 1.0 led many web sites and content management systems to adopt the initial W3C XHTML 1.0 Recommendation. To aid authors in the transition, the W3C provided guidance on how to publish XHTML 1.0 documents in an HTML-compatible manner, and serve them to browsers that were not designed for XHTML.
Such "HTML-compatible" content is sent using the HTML media type (text/html) rather than the official Internet media type for XHTML (application/xhtml+xml). When measuring the adoption of XHTML to that of regular HTML, therefore, it is important to distinguish whether it is media type usage or actual document contents that is being compared.
Most web browsers have mature support for all of the possible XHTML media types. The notable exception is Internet Explorer versions 8 and earlier by Microsoft; rather than rendering application/xhtml+xml content, a dialog box invites the user to save the content to disk instead. Both Internet Explorer 7 (released in 2006) and Internet Explorer 8 (released in March 2009) exhibit this behavior. Microsoft developer Chris Wilson explained in 2005 that IE7’s priorities were improved security and CSS support, and that proper XHTML support would be difficult to graft onto IE’s compatibility-oriented HTML parser; however, Microsoft has added support for true XHTML in developer previews of IE9 that has carried over to the released version of IE9.
As long as support is not widespread, most web developers avoid using XHTML that isn’t HTML-compatible, so advantages of XML such as namespaces, faster parsing and smaller-footprint browsers do not benefit the user.
