After two years, the technology was moved to ICI who set up a subsidiary — the birth of commercial DNA testing.
"The first two or three paternity cases are wildly exciting", he says, "but doing your tenth starts to get a bit dull. I am an experimental geneticist and I wanted to be back at the lab bench.
"When we started, my instinctive conservatism persuaded me that if DNA ever moved into the forensic arena, it would be used sparingly, as a technology of last resort. Now we have four million people on the national criminal database and the way this has impacted on criminal investigation is unbelieveable. Seventy per cent of all forensic tests done in Britain are DNA tests. If you get a crime scene DNA sample and put it on the database, the odds are that you will find your suspect straightaway. It is the most powerful criminal investigation tool there is. If you had told me all that 20 years ago, I would not have believed it."
In America, 180 long-term prisoners have been released through the evidence of DNA fingerprinting. One of them, who had spent two years on Death Row, came to Leicester to thank Jeffreys personally. "It was heartwarming stuff."
Genetic fingerprinting has not made him a fortune. He lives modestly in Leicester with his wife Sue, whom he met when they were teenagers, and they have a cottage overlooking a surfing beach at Tintagel, Cornwall. Here, he swims, surfs, reads novels and delights in being out of range of a mobile phone signal.
Once, when he was sitting outside the cottage, a lad in a wet suit came out of the sea and greeted him with: "Hey, man, you're the DNA dude" — and the name has stuck. The cottage is the only material indulgence DNA has afforded him. When he discovered DNA fingerprinting, his research was being funded by the Lister Institute, a medical charity which owns the patent. "The bulk of royalties went straight back into biomedical research — a bit like cloning myself," he says. "I've never done this for money. We lead a frugal life. We don't need much."

From that moment, Prof Jeffreys entered the realm of celebrity science. The university's switchboard was jammed with calls from people asking him to do tests. One Sunday morning, as he was pruning roses in his front garden, a car drew up and out stepped a lawyer and an immigrant family, begging him to take blood samples. "They had driven all the way from London, having heard about DNA fingerprinting. But I am not a licensed phlebotomist. I was not allowed to do it."
From 1985 to 1987 Jeffreys and his small team at Leicester were living in a pressure cooker themselves, immersed in many hundreds of cases, including the positive identification of the body of the Nazi doctor Josef Mengele, and that of the murdered Tsar Nicholas and his family — in the course of which the Duke of Edinburgh gave a blood sample.
The first forensic application of DNA profiling again caught the public mood after two girls were raped and murdered in the Enderby area of Leicestershire. A man had confessed to one murder but not the other and the police thought genetic profiling might prove him guilty of both. When against all expectations, he was found innocent of both, the hunt was on to find a genetic profile from the male population of the area that matched samples taken from the two victims. Colin Pitchfork was eventually convicted — after being heard boasting that he had persuaded a friend to give a sample on his behalf. Jeffreys was relieved — not just because a killer had been trapped, but because if the operation had failed, the public's perception of forensic DNA as an effective tool would have been shattered.

"It was a 100 per cent accident. Science tends to be a slow, plodding discipline: two steps forward, one step back. To get a eureka moment like that, when suddenly an entire new field opens up, is really rare. Most scientists will go their whole lives never experiencing it."
Prof Jeffreys has cupboards full of trophies and the list of his international prizes, awards and honours runs to three full sheets of A4. But he is untouched by any sense of his own importance and, despite huge inducements to work abroad, is still to be found in white coat and surgical gloves in the same genetics laboratory at Leicester University where he had his eureka moment.
"I am an irrelevance", he said as he accepted his latest accolade, the Great Briton 2006 award. "I was just the lucky guy who happened to start the whole thing off. This is a fantastic honour, because the public has nominated me, but one I personally don't think I deserve."
Prof Jeffreys claims he would have had to be "as thick as two short planks" not to have spotted the significance of those results — but another laboratory had come up with similar patterns a year previously and binned them because it was not what they wanted. The only credit he can take, he suggests, was for coining the inspired phrase genetic fingerprinting and for seeing the forensic implications.
His two great fears were that the technology might not be robust enough to use in casework, and that, even if it were, no one would take a blind bit of notice.
"Even if they did, I thought it would take years for DNA to move into real investigative casework. I could not have been more wrong. There was this pressure cooker of people out there, all needing DNA, though they didn't realise it, and we had the answer."
The lid blew with the very first case: a Ghanian boy who was enabled to stay in the country after DNA successfully proved that he was related to a family already living in Britain.

We peer at the battered exhibit pinned to the wall of Prof Sir Alec Jeffreys's office, a grainy laboratory X-ray that changed his life, our lives and the whole course of genetic science in 30 seconds.
"This is the very first-ever-in-the-entire-world DNA fingerprint", he says, running a nicotine-stained finger across columns made up of boring little oblong blocks, stacked one on top of the other, some thick, some thin.
"That's the DNA of one of my technicians. That's her mum's and that's her dad's. At one fell swoop you can sort out family relationships. I was on my own in the darkroom at 9.05 on September 10, 1984, when that pattern came up and I twigged what we had stumbled upon. Just that single bit of X-ray film threw open a door we didn't even know was there. It opened the whole science of forensic DNA."
Prof Jeffreys had been trying to trace genetic markers through families to understand the inheritance patterns of illness when he made his discovery. In the fuzzy image that had emerged from his developing tank, he saw the sudden, mind-stretching possibility of a method of biological identification that could have huge implications for criminal investigation, for paternity testing, for solving immigration disputes and a whole raft of applications in the natural world.
"My first reaction was that the results were really yucky-looking and complicated. It took about 30 seconds for the penny to drop. I came rushing out of the darkroom. The first person I saw was Vicky Wilson, my technician. 'Hey, we are on to something exciting here,' I told her. We started coming on to all sorts of crazy ideas. I was running round the lab with a needle, pricking myself and spotting blood drops around, because at that point we didn't even know if DNA would survive in a forensic-type specimen.
