Which country, America or Japan, do you think is more individualistic in terms of family life?

Many of you might have heard that Japan is a family-oriented country. So, your answer is probably "America," right? I had thought this way without doubt until this morning when a friend of mine made an objection.

He is a graduate school student and taking an MBA course. I've been helping with his English studies once a week, and today was the day. He's gotten some English materials and questions from the teacher about family life. He was trying to answer this question: "What is the biggest difference between American and Japanese family life?"

He told me that each family member in Japan acts as he/she likes. On the other hand, families in America enjoy more time together. In particular, couples, even after marriage, enjoy going out for movies, dinner, or parties several times a month.

His impression of Japanese family life seems to be that it is very individualistic. Fathers return home very late from work and they don't have enough time to spend with their kids or talk with their wives.

School kids are also very busy going to cram school after school. Thus, most kids eat dinner as soon as they get home alone, then they run to another school in the evening. Mothers, on the other hand, spend more time with their friends, if they don't work full time. Some mothers like going on trips with their friends rather than with their family. The worst case scenario would be a separation of the father from the rest of his family solely due to his job.

I need to recognize the undeniable realities happening in Japan.

I wonder if Japan is really a family-oriented country...

I turned the question over in my mind today.
