    The Big Apple
The expression "The Big Apple" was first used in 1921 in a newspaper column about horse races called "Around the Big Apple". It meant "the place where you could win big money". It was used again in the 1930s and 1940s by jazz musicians who wanted to become rich and famous in New York. The term was revived in 1971 when a
campaign was organised to attract tourists to New York.
