The Harry Potter novels fall within the genre of fantasy literature; however, in many respects they are also bildungsromans, or coming of age novels. They can be considered part of the British children's boarding school genre, which includes Enid Blyton's Malory Towers, St. Clare's and the Naughtiest Girl series, and Frank Richards's Billy Bunter novels. The Harry Potter books are predominantly set in Hogwarts, a fictional British boarding school for wizards, where the curriculum includes the use of magic. In this sense they are "in a direct line of descent from Thomas Hughes's Tom Brown's School Days and other Victorian and Edwardian novels of British public school life". They are also, in the words of Stephen King, "shrewd mystery tales", and each book is constructed in the manner of a Sherlock Holmes-style mystery adventure. The stories are told from a third person limited point of view with very few exceptions (such as the opening chapters of Philosopher's Stone and Deathly Hallows and the first two chapters of Half-Blood Prince).

In the middle of each book, Harry struggles with the problems he encounters, and dealing with them often involves the need to violate some school rules—the penalties, in case of being caught out, being disciplinary punishments set out in the Hogwarts regulations (in which the Harry Potter books follow many precedents in the boarding school sub-genre). However, the stories reach their climax in the summer term, near or just after final exams, when events escalate far beyond in-school squabbles and struggles, and Harry must confront either Voldemort or one of his followers, the Death Eaters, with the stakes a matter of life and death–a point underlined, as the series progresses, by one or more characters being killed in each of the final four books. In the aftermath, he learns important lessons through exposition and discussions with head teacher and mentor Albus Dumbledore.

In the final novel, Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, Harry and his friends spend most of their time away from Hogwarts, and only return there to face Voldemort at the dénouement. Completing the bildungsroman format, in this part Harry must grow up prematurely, losing the chance of a last year as a pupil in a school and needing to act as an adult, on whose decisions everybody else depends—the grown-ups included.

Flashbacks throughout the series reveal that when Harry was a baby he witnessed his parents' murder by Lord Voldemort who was a dark wizard obsessed with blood purity. For reasons not immediately revealed, Voldemort's attempt to kill Harry rebounds. Voldemort is seemingly killed and Harry survives with only a lightning-shaped mark on his forehead as a memento of the attack. As its inadvertent saviour from Voldemort's reign of terror, Harry becomes a living legend in the wizard world. However, at the orders of his patron, the wizard Albus Dumbledore, the orphaned Harry is placed in the home of his unpleasant Muggle (non-wizard) relatives, who keep him safe but completely ignorant of his true heritage.

The first novel in the series, Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone (changed in the U.S. to Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone), begins near Harry's 11th birthday. Half-giant Rubeus Hagrid reveals Harry's history and introduces him to the wizarding world. The world J. K. Rowling created is both completely separate from and yet intimately connected to the real world. While the fantasy world of Narnia is an alternative universe and the Lord of the Rings’ Middle-earth a mythic past, the Wizarding world of Harry Potter exists alongside that of the real world and contains magical elements similar to things in the non-magical world. Many of its institutions and locations are in places that are recognizable in the real world, such as London. It comprises a fragmented collection of hidden streets, overlooked and ancient pubs, lonely country manors and secluded castles that remain invisible to the non-magical population of Muggles.

With Hagrid's help, Harry prepares for and undertakes his first year of study at Hogwarts. As Harry begins to explore the magical world, the reader is introduced to many of the primary locations used throughout the series. Harry meets most of the main characters and gains his two closest friends: Ron Weasley, a fun-loving member of an ancient, large, happy, but hard-up wizarding family, and Hermione Granger, an obsessively bookish witch of non-magical parentage. Harry also encounters the school's potions master, Severus Snape, who displays a deep and abiding dislike for him. The plot concludes with Harry's second confrontation with Lord Voldemort, who in his quest for immortality, yearns to gain the power of the Philosopher's Stone.

I 'already knew' fall arrived, however I could not feel real fall.
Lately the temperature went down /dropped/ fell suddenly, therefore rather than 'fall' I felt unwelcome winter attacked without warning/notice/ .

But, today when I drove my car, what I 'noticed' through car window was that deep／strong fall smell had covered whole roads..
Aah ～～～～～～～～～～～！！！！
It/That? was fall color and smell!！
Yes, right!! Fall usually visits without notice and then usually disappears without a sound.

I know that fall has already arrived, but it doesn't really feel like fall.
Lately the temperature has suddenly fallen/dropped/plunged, so it seems to me that the unwelcome winter weather has arrived without notice.
But, today when I drove my car, what I sensed through car window was that deep／strong fall smell that had covered whole roads..

Frank talks between an adolescent and his parents often reveal that the adolescent is basically willing to rely on his parents for protection in many situations.

No doubt this M.T. was a cautious fellow and had asked my sister the names of a number of her friends so that he could write her without arousing suspicion. Having deduced that much, I marveled to myself at the boldness of youth, and it was enough to make me shudder with fear just to imagine what would happen if our stern and sever father were to find out. But as I read the letters, in the order in which they(d been sent, I began to feel rather giddy in spite of myself, even laughing out loud from time to time at the childlike innocence of the words; it was as if a vast new world were opening for me.
I’d just turned twenty at the time, and I knew all about the different types of anguish a young woman can go through yet must never express in so many words. I read through the pile of thirty-odd letters with all the urgency of a stream rushing down a mountain slope. But when I began the final letter, which had been written the previous fall, I suddenly leaped to my feet. The sensation was, perhaps, like being struck by lightning; I stood bolt upright with the shock. My sister’s romance had not been purely platonic – it had progressed to more detestable things.
I burned the letters, every single one. M.T. was, as far as I could gather, an impoverished poet who lived in the town – and enough of a coward to have abandoned my sister as soon as he learned of her illness. The cruelest things were written in the final letter, and in the most offhand, breezy way – how he and she should try to forget each other, and so on – and since then, apparently, he hadn’t written again.
It occurred to me that if I simple kept to myself what I’d just discovered, my sister could remain, to the end, a pure and unsullied young maiden. No one knows, I told myself, and this heart alone shall bear the torment. But learning the truth only made me pity my sister even more; I imagined all sorts of outrageous things, and I myself felt a bittersweet sort of ache in my heart, a suffocating, horrible kind of feeling that no one but a girl coming of age can ever understand. It was a living hell, and suffered it alone, as if it were I who’d had that dreadful experience. I was really not quite myself in those days, you see.
“Read it, won’t you?” my sister said. “I haven’t the slightest idea what it’s all about.”
Her dishonesty at that moment was thoroughly repellent to me.
“Are you sure it’s all right?” I asked quietly, my fingers shaking in a most discomfiting manner as I took the letter. I knew what it said without opening and reading it. But I had to pretend otherwise. I read it aloud, scarcely looking at the pages.

All the people in that castle town by the sea must have been in mortal fear, hearing the rumbling of those cannons. But I, not knowing what it was and half mad with concern for my sister, believed I was hearing the drums of the netherworld and sat there in the meadow for a long time, crying, afraid even to look up. Not till evening began to fall did I finally stand and walk, in a deathlike trance, back to the temple.
My sister called to me when I got home. She was by now terribly thin and weak, and she seemed to be becoming vaguely aware that she didn’t have long to live. She no longer asked me to cater to her whims, to mother and spoil her, and that was only making it all the more painful for me.
“When did this letter come?” she said.
The question gave me such a start, so pierced my soul, which I felt the blood drain from my face.
“When did it come?” she asked again, all innocence.
I pulled myself together and said, “Just a while ago. While you were sleeping. You were smiling in your sleep, I put it there by your pillow. You didn’t notice, did you?”
“No, I didn’t.” Darkness was falling and her smile was pale and beautiful in the dim light of the room. “I read the letter, though. It’s odd. I don’t know this person.”
Oh, you don’t don’t you? I thought.
I knew who the sender was – a man named “M.T.” Oh, I knew who he was, all right. No, I’d never met him, but five or six days before this I’d been arranging the things in my sister’s wardrobe when I came across a bundle of letters tied with a green ribbon and hidden in the bottom of one of the drawers. It wasn’t the right thing to do, I suppose, but I untied the ribbon and looked at the letters. There were about thirty of them, and they were all from Mr. M.T. Mind you, his name wasn’t written on the envelopes, but the letters were signed by him.
On the envelopes were the names of various girls, all of whom were actual friends of my sister’s. Father and I never dreamed that she was carrying on sure voluminous correspondence with a man.

너무 복잡해요? 사실은 간단해요. 그녀들이 바로 저의 친구들이니까요.

아~~ 남자는 누구냐고요? 음~~ 대만(타이완)에서 온 저의 친구인데 최근에 막 귀국했어요.
그 친구는 한국을 정말 좋아 해서 기회만 있으면 한국에 와서 며칠 머물다가 가곤 한답니다.
그날 그 친구가 우리 수업에 함께 와서 우리들에게 진정한 중국어를 알려 주었답니다.
