Mandarin Phonetic Symbols (MPS), was created by the Beiyang government of China, was used until the communists promoted the use of pinyin around 1960 as a replacement and it's STILL used in education, children's books and as the dominant input method on digital devices in Taiwan. In Chinese, its name is 注音符號.

Younger people in the PRC grew up with Pinyin. It's kind of sad that you never even heard of it though! People do use them though. Millions of children in Taiwan are using them right now and likewise millions of books are printed with them every year. None of the links from my post were from "a lifetime ago".

Actually, I think you'll find them in dictionaries published in the PRC, too. I just checked mine and it includes ㄅㄆㄇㄈ.

Look, you're clearly not the right one to record this. That's fine. Please don't troll the comments just because it's unfamiliar to you. Mandarin Phonetic Symbols is a common English name of the script (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bopomofo)

That is so interesting that mainland Chinese people haven't heard of 注音符號！After all, the system did originate there.
You're right. 注音符號 is the default phonetic alphabet used throughout Taiwan. In fact, people don't know pinyin unless they have a need to and set out to learn it themselves.

P.S. Knowing both 注音 and pinyin, I personally still prefer the former. XD
Hi all, I have been learning zhuyin and I am here to listen to the blending section. However, before I reached that section, I noticed that both recordings for ㄥmight be incorrect. Instead of ㄥ being read as "ong", I have gone on a few YouTube instructions and learned that ㄥ should be read as "eng"? Hoping for some clarifications here!
