Translator
The translator must have an excellent, up-to-date knowledge of his mother tongue, and a knowledge and undersanding of the latest subject-matter in his fileds of specialization. This is his professional equipment.
In addition to this, is is desirable that he should have an inquiring mind, wide interests, a good memory, and the ability to quickly grasp the basic principles of new developments. He should be able to type quickly and accurately. He should be willing to work but be humble enough to consult others if his own knowledge is not adequate for the task at hand.
Strictly speaking, it is unnecessary that he should be able to speak the languages he is dealing with. If he does speak them, it is an advantage, but this skill is in many ways a luxury. There are many other skills and qualities that are desirable in a translator.
