Wow, that is crazy fast! I could hardly keep up just reading along.

Yeah, for the northern accent, words are quite crisp and clipped. On the other hand, the southern accent has more intonation, rythm and normally considered to convey larger range of emotions; it's also closer to English in that there are changes in pitch within each phoneme. I suggest you learn southern accent, most of the learning materials are teaching that accent anyway.

lhdc read too fast. It's not necessary to do that. Even I (a Vietnamese native speaker) can only read with that speed when there is a text (a book, an essay or something) in front of my eyes. But without anything and just talk normally on the street? Never! The language we talk everyday is just faster than umei423's speed a little bit.

Well, actually I can speak even faster than that speed in my every day conversation, with certain sentences. I don't speak EVERY sentences with that speed though, since obviously I have to think about what to say.

The point is, listening is more important than speaking. You can answer slowly to a fast question, but you can't answer at all if you don't even understand what the question is.

The best method is to practice speaking as fast as you can, after you have correct pronunciation. This way you're accustomed to native speed and can have conversation with anyone on the street, especially young ppl, without having them to consider you an outsider

I appreciate your method. So as what you said, perhaps we should read the text twice. Once with slow speed and clear pronounciation, and once with the fast speed which helps people practice like what you said. Anyway not every language leaner can catch up with the crazy fast speed at the very beginning of their study, or even when they've got the intermediate level. We're trying to help them, not scaring them.

Yeah, all in all, if the audio request specifically asks for speaking slowly and clear diction, I'll be more than happy to do that, if not I assume I can speak however I want.
