德语是属于印欧语系日耳曼语族的一门语言，其语法与其他印欧语系的语言有很多相同之处。大体而言，德语与同属日耳曼语族的英语近似，与属于罗曼语系的法语相差较多。德语有冠词，介词，形容词位于它所修饰的名词之前。德语名词有单复数，四个格，三个性别，形容词需要随同其修饰的名词之性数格变化。德语构词法可以构建出相当长的单词，其间不像法语或英语一样需要连字符（-）来连接。
