Gun violence survivors rallied today outside of a Wal-Mart in Denver demanding that the retailer stop selling assault weapons. Good after everybody I am Keith Kountz, we begin this noon in Danbury where dozens of gun survivors turned out for a rally right outside of a Wal-Mart store. That store is just a short distance away from the Sand Hook Elementary school in Newtown. The protestors have a very simple message for the retail giant: Stop selling those assault weapons.
News 8’s Ali Reed Joins us live this noon from Danbury with the latest, Sally.
Good afternoon Keith, dozens of people gathered in front of this walmart here in Danbury to ask the chain store to stop selling assault weapons and munitions, let’s take a look at the video. You can see all the people gathered outside. They’ve all signed an online petition on several organizations such as Change.org, moveon.org asking the retail chain (..?) which is the largest gun retailer in our country to stop selling assault weapons and munitions. They carried those petitions which have been signed by more than three hundred thousand people in our country to the Wal-Mart here. The manager here came outside, accepted the petition, said he would pass it on to the corporate headquarters. That is the goal…The reason why of course they came to this Wal-Mart is because it is just fifteen minutes away from Newtown where just one month ago twenty children and six adults were killed. There were people from all over the country who showed up here today to offer their support. Many of them survivors of shootings or their family members were survivors of shootings. We had a mother here whose daughter was shot in the Virginia Tech shooting back in 2007, a woman who was shot in Tucson Arizona, Gabrielle Gifford’s rally event back in 2011 and a woman whose nine year old daughter Christina Taylor Green was shot and killed at that same event in Tucson back in 2011. As I mentioned more than three hundred thousand signatures. This Wal-Mart right here in Danbury does not sell assault weapons or munitions but they said they chose this Wal-Mart because of its proximity to Newton. We’ll have much more coming up tonight on News 8 at five and six. For now reporting live in Danbury Ali Reed, News 8.
