With each and every record that I ever put out, I definitely go into it with a specific concept, and a... specific...vision for what I want to convey....and what message I have...and what things I have to say in being the person that I have grown into since my last record. That's why I take my time between records.
I am, you know, in this amazing place of embracing the woman that I have become and the woman that I have grown into, and that is why on the cover of Lotus (title name of album, so capitalized) I appear simply as myself, you know, my hair covering, and the locus flower appearing as the sort of fabric. I didn't want it to be anything about fashion or anything...outside of just being raw and real and being myself

Lotus for me represents, as a name, freedom. Lotus is the unbreakable flower to me. Sort of a nod at all of my fans who have stuck with me also throughout the years as fellow unbreakable flowers that, no matter the harshest of weather conditions, no matter the surroundings, toughest of times, we survive. We thrive. And we, you know, stand the test of time.
Um, I collaborated and joined forces with C-Lo and Blake, two of my brothers on the show. Um, they truly have become like family at this point. Adam too, but we did “Moves Like Jagger”. So, I actually — and it wasn’t even intential coming into it, like they have to be on my record. C-Lo in particular. I did a song called “Makes the World Move” that, um, there’s a certain point on the chorus where there’s a part for a male vocal. “C’mon and make the world move!” Like I just knew his voice would just completely be able to bring that song to life as far as what he’s able to give, his signature sound.
Blake! I mean, of all the guys, I’m definitely the closest with Blake. We experimented togethr on a song called “Just a Fool”, which I’m kind of stepping out of my territory a little bit, and I’m combining a little bit of soul with a little bit of country, and him doing the same, and I’m so proud of the song that we did together. I love it. I think it’s a perfect blend and a perfect marriage of two worlds collaborating in the best possible way.
So, coming full circle, I...you know, I'm at a place of celebration...and birthing Lotus to the world.
