What are the most important qualities needed to find God? This is a very important question.
We need to have devotion above everything else.
Sri Yukteswar, who was the saint of Aghani, was the saint of wisdom, and in his book the Holy Science, he said virtually at the end,
"I trust that I have proved that God is love".
It doesn't seem that way to the reader. Nonetheless, he did say in his book that the heart's natural love is the first thing that you must develop and that until you have developed it you cannot take a single step forward on the path.
So, devotion, yes. He also spoke of the meannesses of the heart. Pride of pedigree, pride of wealth, pride of this and that. These are things to overcome.
Basically I would say any attitude that reduces your emphasis on yourself. And that means being generous, not selfish, because selfishness takes things to yourself. Generosity expands yourself. Kindness, same thing. Anger tends to focus on your own dislikes and therefore it focuses on yourself. Passion, lust, greed. All of these focus on your desires. Anything that focuses on your desires, your needs, your likes and dislikes, this is a way of reducing your chances of finding God. We need to seek those qualities that uplift us. Aspiration for truth, truthfulness. It's very important to be truthful. But that doesn't mean to be caustically truthful. Be kind in your truthfulness. Honest, not to steal from people or to steal, or to wish that you had something somebody else owns. All these things basically relate back to this thought of forgetting that you're this little body and aspiring with great devotion to the truth and to God.
