Dave: She's a talented actress, starring in an eagerly anticipated new film, entitled "Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, Part Two". Ha, ha, ha. Part two!
Paul: Yeah you know it!
Dave: Ah, it opens on Friday, ladies and gentlemen, here's the lovely Emma Watson, Emma come on out.
music...
Dave: Hi Emma, how are ya?
Emma: I'm very well, how are you?
Dave: Now, now (mumble) you know, OK.
laughter...
Dave: So you had the, you had the big London premier a couple of nights ago?
Emma: I did, yes...
Dave: Now how did that go?
Emma: It was all right, um, I, uh, I cried...
Dave: It was emotional
Emma: Um, but it, apart from that, no it, it went well, it went well
Dave: Yeah, but, now, now as I alluded to earlier, this is a segment of your life that is now uh finished, right?
Emma: Yes
Dave: And you started when you were nine?
Emma: I started when I was nine, and I am now twenty one and, uh yes. It's all over or it all ends..
Dave: no, no, no
Emma: (can't hear)
Dave; It was just a chapter and we move on to another chapter, and, and, do you look back on this period of your life and think, wow, what a childhood I had?
Emma, Um, yeah, I mean it was pretty remarkable in every way
Dave: Right
Emma: Um, I mean, one in a lifetime kind of experience, and uh
Dave: Any regrets about how you spent your, well, nine years old all the way I mean it's really, it's it's more than you've been alive almost, isn't it?
Emma: It, yes...
laughter...
Emma: I've actually spent more time being Hermione than I have, um being myself, so, it's pretty crazy...
Dave: But, but now, your parents helped you become an actress at that age? You wanted to become an actress? How did this happen?
Emma: Em, no none of the above, actually. I think my parents wanted me to be a dentist or a lawyer or something sensible like that, em, but, but no they came to my school. It wasn't a theatre school or anything..
Dave: Now when you say they, they the producers?
Emma: The people who were auditioning , I guess, kids. And er they saw me in my school gym and they took my photograph and they asked if I would come to London for an audition.
And.. But they..
Dave: Well now see you've got to be very careful about things like that. I mean, it's not funny but..
Emma: Well, thank.. Thank goodness there was nothing sinister about it, but no I mean basically, the, the whole thing just kind of happened to me. It was kind of amazing..
Dave: And it's your, it's your life now.
Emma: And now it's my life.
Dave: So, you don't know anything different.
Emma: Yes
Dave: Do you.. and you must have friends that are not in the Harry Potter movies (laughter) Do you look at their lives and you think: I wonder what it would have been like if I had had a life like that.
Emma: I think it would have been much more boring.
Dave: Yeah
Emma: I'm pretty happy with the way my life turned out
Dave: As well you should be
Dave: Can you imagine now, looking back on this segment of your life and saying, "I had a chance to be the Harry Potter girl, but I turned it down." Well that wouldn't work, would it?
Emma: No, that would have been awful! It would be absolutely awful. Um, I mean who's gonna be THE Harry Potter girl?
Dave: Exactly. The Harry Potter girl! Uh, so tonight is the premiere, here in New York City, right?
Emma: Yes.
Dave: Now, it'll be different than the London premiere, or are they about the same?
Emma: Um, it'll be different. It's always different because it's a different audience. Um, the London audience tends to be a bit more reserved, and uh...
Dave: Americans are dumb right?
Emma: No! No! They're a lot warmer! You know, the [British?] sort of, audience members will come up and say "Um, well, that was very good." and then you'll get the American audience, "That was awesome!"
Dave: Yeah.
Emma: "That was awesome!" And I'm like- [applause]- as much as I love being in the UK, that's the kind of response you want to get to your movie, right? And you get- And people whoop and-
Dave: "Awesome" meaning actually inspiring awe.
Emma: Yes!
Dave: Now I heard when you showed up at the theater people went crazy.
Emma: They, I mean, it was pretty crazy. I mean, there were, there were, I think sort of like 12,000 people who showed up um and no that's a serious number, I'm not even exaggerating that. It was crazy. It was crazy, crazy, crazy. Um. I think people identify with it. They feel like it was a part of their lives and their childhood, and they feel like that's over for them as well, so it's really emotional for them too. Um. I think? I try to, try to analyze it.
Dave: Sure
Emma: Understand-
Dave: Now how many films are we talking about here in the whole series?
Emma: Eight.
Dave: That's crazy, isn't it?
Emma: It is, isn't it?
Emma: Eight Harry Potter films.
Dave: I'm not a film historian but I would guess that has there ever been a series of eight films like that, I don't know, in the last hundred years? Jeez (short for Jesus) I don't know.
Emma: I don't know! I don't think so, not with the same cast
Dave: Like do you remember the Andy Hardy movies? You don't know what I'm talking about do you?
Emma: That was going over my head slightly
Dave: It was like er, Andy Hardy Falls in Love, Andy Hardy Goes to College, Andy Hardy needs a tissue. Crazy stuff!
Emma: I think Andy Hardy and the Philosophers Stone, and the Prisoner of Azkaban. Its very exciting, isn't it?
Dave: You could have been the Andy Hardy girl
Emma: Somehow Harry Potter has got a better ring to it
Dave: Now listen, seriously, now that you're done with the Harry Potter activities, tell me about your lessons, your schooling - how's that going?
Emma: It's going very well!
Dave: What year are you now?
Emma: Ah, I'm about to go into my third year.
Dave: Mmhmm, and where do you go to school, Oxford?
Emma: Um, I'm going to go to Oxford in October, for a year, to study, ah... abroad, it's meant to be, but obviously it's at home for me, so there's kind of an irony in that. Um, but ah - and then I'll do my third year back in the- my fourth year back in the States.
Dave: <Wh- what are you, what are you studying,> at Oxford, what are you studying there?
Emma: English
Dave: It's a huge party school, right, Oxford?
Emma: Oh, crazy, you don't even KNOW what these kids get up to, it's insane. Ah... Yeah, it's, it's gonna... I'm not sure I'm ready for it.
Dave: What, y- y-, but you, y- it's good though that you're doing that because I, I think that just makes you a, uh, uh, more admirable person.
Emma: Oh, thank you.
Dave: And and, uh, s- speaking of like your co-star Harry, uh, Potter.
Emma: Yes
Dave: There now, there are reports now, that he, uh, and it's a lot of pressure. Excuse me, was that something? Did you hear that?
Emma: I did. There was a buzz. There was a beep.
Dave: Was that my pacemaker?
Emma: {laughter}
Dave: I don't know. Somebody... Oh, I know. Somebody else is breaking in. Um, but did, he struggled and would often, uh, you know...
Emma: Would drink!
Dave: Yeah, did you know that? Can we talk about that?
Emma: To be honest, it's really not something that I, I genuinely know much about and you should, I mean he is the one to talk about it. But, as far as I know he never took a sick day, he was like the most professional, amazing...
Dave:Good for him
Emma: guy.
Dave: But,I mean, one can understand the pressure. Because it's not normal, first of all, show-business, there is nothing normal about show-business.
Emma: No. Nothing.
Dave: No, we're like monkeys on a rock. And secondly, for a kid, it's double the pressure. Now, do you drink at all, do you use controlled substances?
[Laughter]
Emma: Uhm, I mean, gosh, um, haha, noo...
Dave: I know the Brits... The Brits really... Have you ever had, like whisky or one of those distilled spirits, have you ever tried that?
Emma: Actually, I mean, yes, I have tried spirits, of course I've tried spirits. We drink at eighteen in the UK, but I'm actually legal to drink here now, as well, [unintelligible] I'm twenty-one.
[Laughter]
Dave: She's flaunting it!
Emma: But yeah, no um. Uh, this is so- I can't...
Dave: No, what were you going to say- What? Did it happen? Did you have a shot of something? And did- Look. Either you did and you liked it or you did and you didn't like it. What-
Emma: I mean- I mean- just, there are substances- I mean- whiskey-
[Laughter]
Emma: I'm dying here! Can-
Dave: No no
Emma: Can we move on?
Dave: Wait a minute. Yes.
Emma: I wanna talk about-
Dave: Let me help here. I- I- uh,
Emma: Ugh
Dave: Have you ever had anything to drink?
Emma: Have I ever had anything to drink?
[Laughter]
Emma: YES!
Dave: yes.
Emma: Yes, I have.
Dave: Ok.
Emma: I got very very drunk once in my life, as everyone does.
Dave: That's all- That's all I'm looking for!
Emma: Um, you know.
[Laughter]
Emma: That's all you wanted! Fine!
Dave: [unintelligible]
Emma: I got drunk! I have been drunk!
[Laughter, cheering]
Dave: Ever had to take a leak on the subway?
Emma: No. It's never- It's never gotten that bad. Uh. Thankfully it's never gotten that bad.
Dave: I'm sorry is it 'the underground' or 'the tube'?
Emma: It's 'the tube'.
Dave: 'The tube' yeah yeah.
Dave: You know, let's do now, Emma, let's take a look at a clip from 'gosh I hope this thing makes some money'.
[laughter]
Emma: Very nice.. nice.
Dave: Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, Part 2. And, this is absolutely it for the Harry Potter movies.
Emma: Absolutely it.
Dave: So, we can assume- I will infer now, that everyone in the film dies.
[laughter]
Dave: Here it is, Emma Watson, Harry Potter and the de- de- Death-
Emma: Deathly Hallows Part2!
Dave: Take a look!
Emma: Great movie, you guys have got to see it!
[fake clip]
Dave: Ok, Deathly Hallows Part 2
[clip]
Dave: Whoa, you know what I'm saying! Thank you.
Emma: Thank you!
Great! Thanks for sharing this
