What are you passionate about?

If you have lots of pride and satisfaction in your work, I think you are fortunate.

Lately I have often tried to search for the meaning of a job. Is it just your bread and butter? Should it be something to live for?

Actually, I am torn between going back to my original job and pursuing my dream. After I took a break from my job several years ago, I totally got into English and learning cultural things.

Interestingly enough, the more I became fascinated with learning English, the more I lost my interest in going back to work.

I'm a pharmacist, and worked in a clinic. I didn't have any complaints about my work, and working as a pharmacist provided a high-income potential. Having said that, if I was asked if I enjoyed the job, I would answer, "I don't know..."

Since I quit the job, I have become caught up in learning English, and I have become hooked on trying to improve it. I wish I could know when I've accomplished fluency. I know it will take me years and years. I wonder why I cared enough about it to throw away my career?

I might be enjoying the process a lot. Even though I'm not a qualified teacher, when some people ask me to teach them English, I happily comply with their requests. When native English speakers want someone who can listen to them, and understand them, I am glad to cooperate. When they need to practice Japanese, I take pleasure in speaking Japanese with them. English has given me tons of joy!

I don't know whether I should be sad or not that I'm unemployed, but I have a lot of time to enjoy myself and also to help people by using English.

As it stands now, I have no idea which direction I am heading for in the future...

She felt a kind of stressed out about having to dream every night. Isn't that a funny thing to stress about? Why do I suddenly mention this topic to you/(everyone?)? It`s because I had a dream last night, so it reminded me of her. Last night I had a few strange dreams: The first: I was somewhere that looked like a soldiers' camp, and suddenly something hit my head and it was really painful. I don`t know why, but at that time suddenly my son came into my mind. The second dream: aah~~~?Why can`t I remember? And the third dream: I still cannot remember, not at all. I get the feeling that I had 3 dreams consecutively. But I cannot remember two of them. It `s not a good feeling, …but will it be OK? Why did I dream those dreams? Do you think these dreams were influenced by (/relative to?someone I connected with ? my psychological state ? I felt like crying while I was listening to my friend's stories and her feelings about her experiences in Japan. She is an American, who has been living here for over 20 years, and one of my best friends.

She opened up to me about why she went back to America and stayed there for over three months this spring, leaving her Japanese husband alone here.

I didn't know it at the time, but that was a trip for her to seek even one way to live for the rest of her life as a "gaijin." She said that if she was not able to find some way, she wouldn't have come back to Japan, ever.

Today, I read an article written by an American musician who has lived in Japan for 16 years. The title is: "Gaijin--just a word or racial epithet with sinister implication?"

I thought about the word "gaijin" over and over again today. I was stupid enough to say, "oh, it's just a contraction of gai-koku-jin. Don't take it seriously" before.

Now, I don't think it is just a word. It's our behavior toward people with a different skin color, with a different eye color and a different hair color. Either way, they are fascinating or considered hostile by Japanese people, and no matter how many years they have lived in Japan and how hard they have tried to understand Japanese culture, it would not be easy to be counted among one of the citizens living in the same country. I'm sorry I got a little carried away about it.

On the back of her hard efforts to learn Japanese culture, understand the people and master the language, she has shown she really loves Japan. Despite that, why are there still people who try to punch her? I'm sad. (Ｔ＿Ｔ）

We are living in a largely homegeneous society. At this moment, I feel ashamed that we have firmly held on to an aspect of the "inside and outside" culture. "Gaijin" is a word that is steeped in history. But, time has passed, and it's about time we became more accepting of other people.
