The Commonwealth of Nations

The Commonwealth or The Commonwealth of Nations is a group of 53 nations from around the world with 2,400,000 inhabitants.

The official headquarter of The Secretariat of the Commonwealth of Nations’ is located in London.

The second Monday of March is Commonwealth Day when the Queen broadcast a message to all the members about the importance of “this family of nations.”

Most of the countries in the Commonwealth were once British colonies. They were part of the British Empire.

Today the members have no legal obligation to each other but they are united by their common history, language and values such as democracy and justice and issues like the environment, trade and human rights.

Since 1952 her Majesty Queen Elisabeth II has been the head of the Commonwealth . But today her role is mostly symbolical.

The Commonwealth games a sporting competition between the Commonwealth members take place every 4 year in a different host country. The first was held in Ontario Canada In 1930 . The next one is scheduled in 2022 in Birmingham, United Kingdom.

WELSH CAKES
These are traditional snacks made of flour, butter or lard (pig fat), eggs, sugar and raisins. They are roughly circular and about 1.5 cm thick.
BARA BRITH
This is a fruit cake traditionally made with raisins, currants (raisins secs) and candied
peel (fruits confits).
ROAST LAMB
This is a very traditional Welsh dish. It consists of caramelized lamb with vegetable accompaniments.
COCKLES
These are a popular type of seafood. Cockles are sold freshly cooked as a snack in the UK, particularly around the coastline which are inhabited by cockles.
LEEK SOUP
Because of their symbolism in Wales, leeks have come to be used extensively in that country´s cuisine.
LAMB AND MINT SAUCE
Mint sauce is made from finely chopped mint leaves, soaked with vinegar and sugar. It is traditionally used as a complement to roast lamb.
SCONES AND CLOTTED CREAM
Clotted cream is a thick yellow cream usually served as part of a tea on scones with strawberry or raspberry jam.
CAWL
This is a traditional Welsh stew – consisting of meat and vegetables. Cawl is translated as ´soup´ in modern day Welsh.
LAVERBREAD
This is a traditional Welsh delicacy made from laver (nori). To make laverbread, the seaweed is boiled and then minced. The resulting paste is sold as it is or rolled in oatmeal. It can also be used to make sauce.
CREMPOGS
These are Welsh pancakes served piled and spread with butter.

Oasis were an English rock band formed in Manchester in 1991. Developed from an earlier group, the Rain, the band originally consisted of Liam Gallagher (lead vocals, tambourine), Paul "Bonehead" Arthurs (guitar), Paul "Guigsy" McGuigan (bass guitar) and Tony McCarroll (drums).
Upon returning to Manchester, Liam's older brother, Noel Gallagher (lead guitar, vocals) joined as a fifth member, which formed the band's core and settled line-up.

Queen are a British rock band formed in London in 1971, originally consisting of Freddie Mercury (lead vocals, piano), Brian May (guitar, vocals), John Deacon (bass guitar), and Roger Taylor (drums, vocals). Queen's earliest works were heavily influenced by progressive rock; in the mid-1970s, the band ventured into more conventional and radio-friendly works, bringing them greater commercial success. Later they incorporated more diverse and innovative styles in their music, exploring the likes of gospel music, electronic music and funk.
Queen enjoyed success in the UK during the early 1970s, but it was the release of Sheer Heart Attack (1974) and A Night at the Opera (1975) that gained the band international success. The latter featured "Bohemian Rhapsody" stayed at number one in the UK charts for nine weeks. In 1991 Mercury died of bronchopneumonia, a complication of AIDS, and Deacon retired in 1997.
The band has released a total of 18 number one albums, 18 number one singles and 10 number one DVDs, and has sold over 300 million albums worldwide, making them one of the world's best-selling music artists. They were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2001.

The Beatles, or the Fab Four, is an English rock band, formed in Liverpool in 1960. They are one of the most famous rock groups!

Musicians John Lennon and Paul McCartney played together in the late 1950s. With Harrison they formed 'The Silver Beatles' in 1959 and then in 1962, Ringo Starr joined the trio and they became the Beatles.
They are the first British band to write their own songs and music. They are the only group in recording history to have 20 songs reach number one! Yesterday and Yellow submarine for example are very famous.
The band recorded 214 songs between 1962 and 1970 and separated in 1970.
