what is the "da" at the end of every sentence? is it a word for respect?

When speaking to large numbers of people (like in a book), or when first meeting someone, it is standard to use "ㅂ니다"(if following a vowel) or "습니다"(if following a consonant) at the end of a sentence. So 넓다(to be wide) would be 넓습니다, and 하다(to do) would be 합니다. Most books that are intended for business men cover this in the first chapter, other books don't cover it because learners often don't use it and will only hear it at staff meetings or in church, etc.
