Please change the name ( Paolo / Paola ) depending on your gender, thank you ;-)

New York has always been known for its diversity because of the successful waves of immigration that came to the New World in search for the American Dream, the hope that in the United States of America, anyone can become rich or famous if they work hard and try their very best.
It has often been described as the largest Irish city in the world. At the same time, it has the largest Jewish community. There are more Jews in New York City than in Israel.
The Italian community is pretty large too. My name is Paola / Paolo Badia and I live in Little Italy, on Marbury Street. It’s in the lower East side of Manhattan, very close to Chinatown where the majority of Chinese live but there are also many Chinese people in Queens. They came after the Civil War to work on railway lines and in mines.
Many Eastern Europeans such as Ukrainians, Poles, Lithuanians and even Russians came here after World War II. Now, some tend to settle in Brooklyn.
African-Americans have definitely contributed to the character of the city. The Black community has produced famous writers and of course jazz musicians. They mostly live in Harlem and in the Bronx. Sadly, they are often poor and destitute and many still suffer from racism which is still a problem.
The Latinos represent quite a large proportion of the population. Puerto-Ricans, Cubans, Colombians and other Latin Americans now form one fifth of the city’s population. Most of the Puerto-Ricans are in the Bronx but you’ll also find many in East-Harlem, in an area called El Barrio where poverty and unemployment are the most important problems.
There are about a hundred different nationalities in New York: Germans, Greeks, Armenians, Koreans, Indians, Vietnamese, Asians, Arabs, Senegalese … That’s why New York is such a fantastic melting pot.
This idea of “melting pot” is a metaphor used to describe a place where many different people and ideas exist together, mixing and becoming a whole.

New York has always been known for its diversity and thus known as a 'melting pot', a metaphor used to describe a place where many different people and ideas exist together, mixing and becoming a whole. This mix has developed because of the successful waves of immigrants who came to the New World in search of the American Dream; the hope that in the United States of America anyone can become rich or famous if they work hard and try their very best.

It is better to include definitions of key terms for your essay, e.g. 'melting pot' in the introduction.
If this is an essay you should not use contractions such as 'you'll'. Use full words if you are writing a formal piece.
