Listen & SpeakⅠ

1. G: It's so hot today.
B: You're telling me. I can't believe it's September.
G: Each year, it gets hotter and hotter.
B: I know. Global warming is a big problem.
G: Yeah. We need to do something.

2. B: Look at those kids running on the street.
G: They shouldn't do that, it's not safe.
B: You can say that again.
G: Where are their parents?
B: I don't know, but they should watch their kids.

3. G: The park is so dirty.
B: You're telling me. I can't believe it.

Disappearing Islands
Dear World,
Hi, my name is Taukelina. I'm a middle school student living in Tuvalu. Have you heard of Tuvalu? It's an island in the Pacific Ocean near Australia. It's a very small but beautiful island. I'm writing this letter to ask for your help.

My country is sinking into the sea. Do you know why? Global warming caused all this to happen. Warmer weather makes the ice melt. Because of the melting ice, the sea level rises. Some scientists say my country could disappear in 50 years. I'm very worried.

I really don't want the people in my country to lose their homes. Here are some things we do to slow down global warming.
We always turn off the lights, the television, and the computer when we are not using them.
We try not to cut down trees. Trees take CO2 out of the air.
We usually don't travel by car. We walk, ride a bike, or take the bus.

We recycle bottles, cans, plastic bags, and newspapers.
When we recycle, we help save the Earth.
Oh! I almost forgot. There is one more thing. Could you please show this letter to your friends?
Thanks for reading my letter. I really do hope you can help us. Bye for now.
Love,
Taukelina
