What is Earth Hour?
Earth Hour is a special event organized by the World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF) to help protect our planet. It happens every year on the last Saturday of March from 8:30 pm to 9:30 pm. During this hour, people all around the world turn off their non-essential lights and electrics for an hour as a symbol of their commitment to the Earth.
This year, the event will happen on the 25th of March 2024.
When did Earth Hour first start ?
Earth hour first started as a lights-off event in Sydney in Australia in 2007. Earth Hour has now evolved to an annual event, encouraging many around the world to show how much they care about the future of our planet ! This year is a special year for Earth Hour, as it will be the first 'virtual spotlight' event! This means that this year WWF will be hosting a video, which you can share to raise as much awareness as possible !
What can you do to take part in Earth Hour?
Earth Hour is not just about turning off lights. It's about taking action to make a positive impact on our planet. People can choose to do different activities they love during this hour. Some people might have a candlelit dinner, go for a walk in nature, or even have a family game night without using any electricity.
Earth Hour has achieved many great things since it started. For example, in Uganda, they created the world's first Earth Hour Forest. In Argentina, Earth Hour helped pass a bill to create a Marine Protected Area. These are just a few examples of the positive impact Earth Hour has had around the world.
Why is Earth Hour important?
The goal is to remind ourselves that every hour counts when it comes to taking care of the Earth. Every single day, we contribute to our planet heating up, by using or wasting electricity! In recent years the Earth Hour movement has seen entire streets, buildings, landmarks and city skylines go dark to take part ! This draws attention to the issues of climate change and global warming. We need to do our bit to protect the planet, as there's no planet B !
So, let's join the millions of people who participate in Earth Hour every year. Let's take that one hour to show our love for the Earth and think about what we can do to protect it. Whether it's turning off lights, planting trees, or reducing waste, every small action can make a big difference. Together, we can create the biggest hour for Earth and make a positive impact on our planet.
