Laura looked over at the bowl of cherries sitting on her bedside table. They were perfect, shiny, deep-red jewels. They made a pleasant contrast to the sterile, white surroundings of her bedroom. She thought the bowl looked like an impressionist painting, perhaps a still life by Cezanne. Some were sweet and some were a little sour, one couldn't always tell by looking at them, even if they were picked from the same tree. It was always a bit of a surprise. Perhaps it was similar to life she thought, her own happiness or lack of it probably depended on whether she chose to recall the good fruit or the bad.

ベッドサイドテーブルの上にさくらんぼの入ったボウルがおいてあった。赤く、つめたく熟れてのようだ。白い寝室に、よく、映えている。まるで印象派の絵画、そう、セザンヌの静物画みたいだ。手をのぼして、ひとつぶつまんでみた。ひんやりとなめらかだ。口にふくんでみるとそれはあまかった。さくらんぼは少しすっぱかったり、あまかったりするけど、見ているだけではわからない。同じ樹でもちがう。
ふしぎなものだ。まるで、人生みたいだとローラは思った。幸せを感じるか、ものたりなく思うか、それは楽しかったことと辛かったことのどちらをふりかえるかできまるのかもしれない。
