Independence Day
In 1620, about a hundred English people landed in North America on their ship The Mayflower.
They settled on the east coast. More English people emigrated later and in 1733 thirteen colonies were founded. But they soon decided to be independent from England and they signed The Declaration of Independence on July 4th 1776, in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. In Independence Hall the "Liberty Bell" was rung to celebrate the birth of The United States.
In 1789, George Washington was elected the first President of the USA.
The US capital was named Washington after the first president of the United States.
Thomas Jefferson was the principal author of the Declaration of Independence. He became the third president of the USA in 1801.
Every year on July 4th, Americans celebrate their independence with parades, marching bands, barbecues, picnics and fireworks.
