Trooping the colour or the Queen's Birthday parade.
It is the Queen's official birthday. It is celebrated on the second Saturday of June. The ceremony takes place on Horse Guards Parade, near St James's Park not very far from Buckingham Palace.
The Queen's birthday parade is the biggest royal event of the year.
It is a spectacular and colourful military parade on Horse Guards Parade with about 1,400 soldiers, 200 horses and 400 musicians.
The British sovereign receives the Salute of the troops and inspects them. When she was younger,the Queen did all this on horseback. Now she is in a carriage.
Why the name "Trooping the colour " ?
In the parade, the regiments show the Queen their flags: they "troop the colour". Trooping the colour was important on the battlefield in the past. It stimulated the troops.
After the ceremony, the Sovereign appears with her family on the balcony of Buckingham Palace.
Members of the Royal family, guests and the public watch a flypast by the Royal Air Force.
