Education began to change back in the 1960s, and if we compare today's education with the one our grandparents received, we can see there are many important differences. In the old days, the teacher did most of the talking, while the students just listened and were supposed to absorb what the teacher taught. The teacher was an authority figure, who could even impose physical punishment. Nowadays this kind of punishment is completely forbidden; as a result, many teachers feel defenceless. In the old system, repetition was the main way of learning, while children are encouraged now to use their creativity and their problem-solving skills, rather than their memory. Boys and girls used to attend different classes, whereas they are the in the same class in most schools nowadays. Perhaps the most dramatic change is that a wide use is made of the communication technologies in class.
Some people, though, disagree that all these changes have been for the better.
