The language here is pretty old fashioned. People do not normally use Mr / Mrs and "Ni" in daily speech anymore. Adjö is also a bit dated.

Tack Johanna! This is from the "Suédois Sans Peine" Assimil course (from several decades ago I think), so that might explain the outdated expressions. Would you just use "du" in most situations now?

Haven't you got the tapes for that course? Or is there something wrong with them?

But the answer to the question is that it is not necessary to say Ni to anyone but sometimes you can choose to do it. Save it for older people that you really respect. It's a matter of upbringing and it's partly an "equality" thing.
