The Institute of Medicine's Aims for Improvement
Aim 1: Care should be SAFE.
Safe care means avoiding injuries to patients from the care that is intended to help them.
Aim 2: Care should be EFFECTIVE
Effective care means providing services based on scientific knowledge to all who could benefit, and refraining from providing services to those not likely to benefit.
Aim 3: Care should be PATIENT-CENTERED.
Patient-centered care means providing care that is respectful of and responsive to individual patient preferences, needs, and values, and ensuring that patient values guide all clinical decisions.
Aim 4: Care should be TIMELY.
Timely care means reducing waits and sometimes harmful delays for both those who receive and those who give care.
Aim 5: Care should be EFFICIENT.
Efficient care means avoiding waste, including waste of equipment, supplies, ideas, and energy.
Aim 6: Care should be EQUITABLE.
Equitable care means providing care that does not vary in quality because of personal characteristics such as gender, ethnicity, geographic location, and socioeconomic status.
