Belfast is the capital and largest city of Northern Ireland. It is, after Dublin, the second largest city on the island of Ireland. Historically, the city has experienced a lot of political violence, although these days things are fairly calm in that respect. That said, much of the city is still segregated along religious or political lines. Belfast has always been (and in some ways still is) an important industrial centre, especially for the linen, tobacco, and shipbuilding industries. In fact, the city was nicknamed "Linenopolis" in the 19th century because of all the linen that was produced there. The city does get quite a few visitors, and boasts some interesting landmarks, including the beautiful neoclassical city hall, Belfast Castle, and the Grand Opera House.
