Do you believe that a good-natured insult can be seen as a sign of affection?

It doesn't apply to Japanese culture, I guess, but how about in your country?

Today, I read an article which was very interesting to me; because it felt exciting and unusual to be connected with foreign cultures.

Imagine this: It's your retirement party, and one of your co-workers stands to toast you. He lifts up the microphone and starts to say,

"When I met him 20 years ago, he was arrogant and foolish. Now, he's the complete opposite! Now, he is foolish and arrogant." Haha, I know it's a joke, but I wonder how the main character feels about it.

It hasn't ended; he continues,

"But really, he's a dark and handsome guy. When it's dark, he's handsome." Haha, I laugh because I'm just one of the outsiders. However, if I were in the party, I would be worried about his feelings and also his family's.

The article says that it's the tradition of the roast. A roast can take place at a retirement party, birthday party, farewell party and so on.

I remember some movie scenes where they speak at a roast. Some audiences laugh innocently, but some look awkward in the movies I've watched.

In Japan, it would never happen. When someone toasts you, he or she gives you ample praise. Sometimes it's too much, and it could sound awkward and uncomfortable. But it's much better for Japanese people than being roasted.

Are those jokes really a sign of affection in your country? 。o@(^-^)@o。
