Agatha Christie was born Agatha Miller on September 15, 1890 in England. She was educated at home by her mother until she was 16, when she moved to Paris to study singing and piano.
In 1914, she married Colonel Archibald Christie, a military pilot.
She published her first book in 1920 and it marked the first appearance of her most famous character : detective Hercule Poirot.
1926 was a chaotic year for Agatha Christie. Her mother died and she discovered that her husband was having an affair with another woman.
Traumatized, she disappeared on the third of december 1926, creating a mystery even bigger than the ones in her books!
Her disappearance started an extraordinary manhunt, more than one thousand policemen were assigned to the case. It was the perfect tabloid story and there were rumours that she had been murdered by her husband or that she had committed suicide.
Eleven days later, she was found but she claimed that she remembered nothing and she never spoke about the missing eleven days of her life.
Agatha and Archibald divorced in 1928.
She died on the twelfth of january 1972 but her popularity, however, didn’t die with her.
She wrote more than 70 detective novels and her international success earned her nicknames like « the queen of crime » and « the queen of mystery ». She sold more than 2 billion books worldwide and, to this day, only Shakespeare and the Bible have sold more books than her !
