Fact 1: James Cook was born in 1728 in Yorkshire, England.
Fact 2: When he was young, James Cook worked as a farm boy. When he was eighteen he decided to go to sea. In 1746, he became a sailor.
Fact 3: In 1768, James Cook became a lieutenant in the Royal Navy. The British Crown wanted to settle in new lands, so James Cook set off from Plymouth on the Endeavour.
Fact 4: During the voyage James Cook and his crew visited Tahiti. The natives were so friendly that some of Cook’s crew wanted to stay!
Fact 5: Cook landed on the east coast of Australia, where they found a lot of interesting plants and animals, like the kangaroo.
Fact 6: James Cook and his crew were one of the first Europeans to meet Australian natives.
Fact 7: Captain Cook named the eastern coast of Australia New South Wales.
Fact 8: He made two other voyages to the Pacific, in 1772 and in 1776.
Fact 9: Captain Cook and his crew usually got along well with the natives. But, one day, a fight broke out with the native people of Hawaii and Captain Cook was killed.
