All animals have their own home. Some birds do not stay in the same place all through the year. When it gets cold, they leave their home for some warmer places. In the winter, they can't get enough food because the ground is covered with snow and ice. There are many mysteries about their journey. They start their journey at almost the same time every year. How do they know when to leave? They make their long journey by the same course every year without losing their way. How can they find the way? What strange calendars and maps do they have inside their bodies? They are able to feel very small changes in the weather, and they find the way by the position of the sun and stars. Most birds fly together when they make a long journey.
They fly quite near the land or water, and go higher when they come to mountains. They can fly a long way in a day. Sometimes they don't get any food or rest until they reach their other home. Some can travel from Alaska to Hawaii in only one flight. Their journey is full of dangerous things, Some may get tired and fall to the waves. When dark clouds or heavy rain hide the sun and stars, they may lose their way and die. Many poor birds cannot get safely to the end of their journey.
