There are about 55 million inhabitants: the majority, about 49 million people, is black. The largest black ethnic groups are the Zulu (11 million) and the Xhosa (8 million). There are about 4 million whites. There is also a minority of Asians (from the Indian sub-continent). South Africa is often called the Rainbow Nation because its population is made up of many different peoples and cultures. Because of the diversity of South Africa, there are eleven official languages: 9 African languages plus English and Afrikaans (the languages of the two groups of Europeans which colonised South Africa: the British and the Dutch). English is the most commonly spoken language spoken in official public life.
