Did you ever think that supernatural people could exist? From a very young age, Jacob has heard his grandfather's stories about the special children of the orphanage, the director, the loop and the monsters. Every night, old Abe would sit on his grandson Jake's bed and take out his old photos of "peculiar children." But one day, Jacob decided he was too big for these fairy tales and stopped thinking about those kids in the pictures. After a few years, his grandfather called him, panicked because the monsters had returned. The same evening, Jacob found his grandfather dead in the forest. And behind trees, a monster was running away at full speed. From that day Jacob thought he was going crazy. But to comply with his grandfather's last wishes, he went to the special island. There, he found the peculiar children and the Hollows... First of all, we feel that the author, Ransom Riggs, originally worked for cinema as his writing is visual. The descriptions are not psychological and he takes time to outline the personality of the characters before the story begins. But the descriptions first serve to describe, to set the scene for the action. Then, photos are inserted in the narrative, often illustrating certain descriptions of individuals which would be too complicated to complete without a picture. This choice of inserting photos, in addition to making it more accessible to young people, also proves the author's willingness to work with images. The author himself says that he worked with these photos as basic material for his story. So it's a perfect novel for those who can't stand long descriptions and need action.
