ある日、小さなすずめが、木からおちて羽をけがしました。
とても痛がって、飛べなくなったすずめは、地面の上をはって、「だれか、助けて下さい！ どうか助けて下さい！」 と、泣いていました。
そのとき、その近くを、あごに白いひげをはやした、やさひそうなおじいさんが通りかかりました。おじいさんは、さんぱのとちゅうで、その小さなすずめを見つけて、立ち止まり、ひろい上げました。
小さいすずめは、「チュー、チュー、チュン、チュン」 とすすり泣きました。
「かわいそうな、小鳥さん」 やさしいおじいさんは、「わしが、お前の世話をしてやろう」 と、言いました。
