In "The Shield of Achilles", Homer portrays life at the end of the Dark Ages bathed in a bright light. A different and harsher vision is provided by Homer's Boeotian contemporary, the poet Hesiod. Hesiod uses the occasion of a suit between himself and his brother over the division of their father's property to describe in a manner reminiscent of the contemporary Jewish prophets life in a world in wich the gods have ordained that man can prosper only through endless toil in competition with his neighbors.
I actually didn't know how to pronounce Achilles, Boeotian, or Hesiod. Even after hearing the pronunciation of Hesiod on dictionary.com (http://dictionary.reference.com/browse/Hesiod) I could still barely get my brain to say. It was very odd.
Hope this is good for you!
