日本人の恥に敏感な態度
Japanese people do not readily hide under their desks, even if there is a huge earthquake.
たとえ大きな地震がおこった場合でも、日本人はなかなか机の下に隠れようとしません。
This is because they are accustomed to earthquakes and also because they are reluctant to be the first person to act since they feel embarrassed when they do something different from other people.
なぜなら、彼らは地震に慣れており、何かを最初にすることを非常に恥ずかしがるからです。彼らは、他人と違うことをするときに恥を感じるのです。
Old habits die hard.
昔からの癖はなかなか直らないものです。
But, on this occasion, all my co-workers hid under their desks without a thought for anyone else.
しかし、今回においては、すべての同僚が他人のことなど考えず机の下に隠れました。
The major earthquake erased the Japanese people's susceptibility to feeling shame.
大地震が日本人の恥に敏感な態度を消してしまったのです。
