Hello Jamala, on your voicemail, I am Christine the International Students Coordinator at Duke Institute in Auckland.
You called to ask whether you could learn about Maori culture, in addition to your English classes. As a matter of fact, we have recently added a Maori Culture module to our curriculum and we are very excited about this.
We now have a wonderful new staff member, named Teresa Walker, who is Maori. She will come into school on a part-time basis for an afternoon session with our students every other week.
We held a traditional Powhiri to officially welcome Teresa to Duke. Two weeks before the event, the students learnt a Maori song and also the New Zealand national anthem in English and Maori to sing at her welcome.
It was a very special afternoon for both students and staff, one of our higher level students from New Caledonia spoke on behalf of our students and his speech was very moving for all of us, as he spoke from his heart about his homestay and NZ in general. This lesson brought the whole school together and the students really worked with one another in a wonderful bonding exercise.
Teresa’s husband came with her and taught our male students how to do the Haka. It was amazing.
