Library Tour
Narrator: Listen to a conversation between a male student and a female librarian.

Student: Hi. I'm new here … I, uh, couldn't come to the student orientation—and I'm wondering if you can give me a few quick pointers about the library? I'd really appreciate it.

Librarian: Sure. I'd be glad to. What's your major area of study?

Student: Latin American literature.

Librarian: OK. Well, over here's the section where we have language, literature, and the arts, and if you go downstairs you'll find the history section. Generally the students who concentrate in Latin American literature find themselves researching in the history section a lot.

Student: Uh-huh. You're right. I'm a transfer student. I've already done a year at another university, so I know how the research can go—I've spent a lot of time in the history section. So how long can I borrow books for?

Librarian: Our loan period is a month. Oh, I should also mention that we have an interlibrary loan service … if you need to get hold of a book that's not in our library. There's a truck that runs between our library and a few other public and university libraries in this area. It comes around three times a week.

Student: Hey, that's great! At my last school, it could take a really long time to get the materials I needed, so when I had a project, I had to make a plan way in advance. This sounds much faster. Another thing I was wondering is … is there a place where I can bring my computer and hook it up?

Librarian: Sure. There's a whole area here on the main floor where you can bring a laptop and plug it in for power. But on top of that we also have a connection for the Internet at every seat.

Student: Nice! So I can do all the research I need to do right here in the library. I'll have all the resources, all the books and information I need right here in one place!

Librarian: Yup, that's the idea! … I'm sure you'll need photocopiers, too. They're down the hallway to your left. We have a system where you have to use a copy card, so you'll need to buy a card from the front desk. You insert it into the machine and you're ready to make copies.

Student: How much do you guys charge?

Librarian: Seven cents a copy.

Student: That's not too bad. Thanks. Uh, where's the collection of rare books?

Librarian: Rare books are up on the second floor. They're in a separate room where the temperature is controlled to preserve the old paper in them. You need to get special permission to access them, and then you'll have to wear gloves to handle them, 'cause the oils in our hands, you know, can destroy the paper, and gloves prevent that, so we have a basket of gloves in the room.

Student: OK, thanks … I suppose that's all I need to know. You've been very helpful, thanks.

Librarian: Any time. Bye.

Student: Bye

Two Ducks and the Frog
The Frog lives in the river. She is very kind. But she
likes to chat a lot. She can chat from morning
till night. She has got two good friends. They are big
ducks.
Autumn comes. It’s cold, cloudy, and windy. It’s time
for the ducks to fly to Africa. They like summer
because it's hot and sunny. They don’t like winter.
It’s snowy and cold. The Frog likes summer too. She wants
to see Africa. She says, “My friends, take me
to Africa with you, please!”
“Good!” — say the ducks. “But you must
not speak! Don’t open your mouth!”
So the Frog takes a stick in her mouth and
puts it in the middle. Then one
duck takes one end of the stick, the other
duck takes the other end. They start to fly.
The children see the ducks in the sky.
“Look! What have the ducks got? What
is it? ”
“It is a big clock!”
“I am not a clock! I am a Frog!”
And flop! The Frog falls down from the sky.

There is a dog. The dog is small. It is wearing a scarf. The dog is cold. It runs and runs until the house. The house is big. The house is warm. The dog sits on the carpet and sleeps.

More and more graduates are taking a year out : to stop, reflect, and to work out what they want to do with their lvies.
According to Anne-Marie MARTIN, director of the Careers Group, University of London, there can be many benefits to a year out, but it depends on what you do and why.
'If all you do after university is sit around watching TV, there is probably little benefit. But if you go travelling, decide to increase your skills in some way or try your hand at temporary jobs to see what suits you, then it can be hugely valuable'.

When 23-year-old Alice CLARFELT took a year off after uni, she didn't just want to travel - she wanted to immerse herself in another culture.
Alice who has an MA in English from Leeds, spent nine months teaching about sexual health and HIV/ AIDS to young people in the eastern Cape, South Africa, with the charity SPW (Student Partnership Worldwide).
'I was living in a little mud hut in a rural community. I'd get u, go and fetch water from about half an hour away, come back, boil the water in order to wash, prepare for the day, and do a workshop in the school'.

Alice says she has benefited from the global perspective she gained from the trip. 'In my community, they didn't have any running water', she says. So Alice took it upon herself to go to the municipal offices and make a case for a water tap - something she says she'd never have dont at home.
'they actually came, investigated it all, wrote up a report and they're now building a tap and a well in the community. And I was like 'Yeah, I've really achieved something'.
Anne-Marie MARTIN says Alice's experiences will impress future employers.
'Independently travelling around, learning how to stand on your own two feet and understanding how to fit into different cultures gives you a maturity which employers are going to recognise and be interested in.
