The book opens with Harry Potter having a dream about Frank Bryce, the ex-caretaker at the Riddle family mansion, who is caught eavesdropping on a deformed Lord Voldemort and his servant, Peter Pettigrew. In Harry's dream, Bryce is killed by Voldemort. Later in the summer, Harry, Hermione Granger, and the Weasley family take a trip to the Quidditch World Cup. While there, Death Eaters, Voldemort's servants, storm the grounds, harass some muggles, and run away when they see the Dark Mark in the sky.

Albus Dumbledore announces during the welcoming feast that the school will host the Triwizard Tournament, an inter-school competition. One student from each of three magical schools will be chosen by the Goblet of Fire to compete. The other two magical institutions, Beauxbatons Academy, and Durmstrang Institute, arrive at Hogwarts two months into the school term. The champions chosen by the goblet were Fleur Delacour from Beauxbatons, Viktor Krum of Durmstrang, and Cedric Diggory of Hogwarts. Mysteriously, Harry is also chosen, even though he did not submit his name. Ron Weasley is instantly infuriated, thinking Harry submitted himself, and their friendship suffers.

Throughout the three previous novels in the Harry Potter series, the main character, Harry Potter, has struggled with the difficulties that come with growing up and the added challenge of being a famous wizard. When Harry was a baby, Voldemort, the most powerful Dark wizard in history, killed Harry's parents but mysteriously vanished after unsuccessfully trying to kill Harry. This results in Harry's immediate fame and his being placed in the care of his muggle, or non-magical, Aunt Petunia and Uncle Vernon, who have a son named Dudley Dursley.

Harry enters the wizarding world at the age of 10, enrolling in Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry. He makes friends with Ron Weasley and Hermione Granger and is confronted by Lord Voldemort trying to regain power. In Harry's first year he has to protect the Sorcerer's Stone from Voldemort and one of his faithful followers in Hogwarts. After returning to the school after summer break, students at Hogwarts are attacked after the legendary "Chamber of Secrets" is opened. Harry ends the attacks by killing a Basilisk and defeating another attempt by Lord Voldemort to return to full strength. The following year, Harry hears that he has been targeted by escaped murderer Sirius Black. Despite stringent security measures at Hogwarts, Harry is confronted by Black at the end of his third year of schooling, and Harry learns that Black was framed and is actually Harry's godfather. He also learned that it was Sirius and James Potter's friend Wormtail who actually betrayed his parents.

Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire is the fourth novel in the Harry Potter series written by J. K. Rowling, published on 8 July 2000. The book attracted additional attention because of a pre-publication warning from J. K. Rowling that one of the characters would be murdered in the book. 3 million copies of the book were sold over the first weekend in the US alone.

The novel won a Hugo Award in 2001; it was the only Harry Potter novel to do so. The book was made into a film, which was released worldwide on 18 November 2005.

@"Your Japanese is Good!"

Yesterday, I read an interesting article in the Japan Times；its author, Mark Schreiber, has been working in Japan for 20 years.

He mentioned some flattering sounding phrases told by Japanese people.

There is a phrase, "Nihongo ga ojozu desu ne", meaning "Your Japanese is good" (in English), which people have been saying to him for years.

He says in the article, "It took me a while to realize that such a remark was probably never really intended as a compliment in the first place. Rather, it should be taken as encouragement, meaning something akin to "Wow!, I actually understood what you just said."

Well, I personally would not say this, unless I am really impressed by someone's Japanese. However, I guess this is generally true.

He chose to use this phrase as an example. Does it mean that the phrase "Your English is good" is used in a different situation in the West?

Actually, I am not very comfortable at hearing "Your English is good" because I know it is not true. I just blush, and feel embarrassed. Unfortunately, I can't take it with genuine pleasure because I still think of it the Japanese way. It is often just an encouragement, not a compliment in Japan, just as the author says.

However, if the phrase "Your English is good" is used by westerners in a way that is different way from what I imagine, I should take it as an honest compliment, right?

Would you say "Your English is good" to non-native English speakers of just like Japanese people say to non-native Japanese speakers? In what kind of situation would you say it?

I am very curious.

Where has the male-dominated society gone in Japan?

Lots of young men are becoming herbivores!: This is what has been reported in the media more and more these days, which means that they are becoming more passive.

It's said that Japen's twenty- and thirty-something males are disinterested in careers and are apathetic about the rituals of dating, sex and marriage! （^^；）

What is happening to them?

A columnist, Maki Fukasawa, coined the term "soshoku-danshi", which is literally translated as "herbivorous male" and it's become one of the cultural buzzwords in Japan today.

Those grass-eaters seem to want to live with their moms, which is the coziest place, and spend too much time on clothing and cosmetics.

The number of young men in ballet schools has been increasing.

Now, many have started complaining about their new life style.

I guess that Japan has expected men to be very manly, like warriors, to pay for everything, to get good jobs and work overtime for their companies at the expense of their families and even their health.

This is actually what the post-war samurais, now in their 60s, were doing. I appreciate their hard work, because they did a lot for Japan; however, it has resulted in some unexpected consequences as well.

Now, young grass-eaters have started saying, "What can be bad about that?"

I don't have any clear answers regarding this; It's a really complex issue.

They might be waiting for carnivorous women as their partners...

Recommendations:

1. Introduce standardization of curricula and licensing and certification of teachers to improve standards (as is done in the USA).

2. Introduce high quality selection procedure for higher level teachers and offer the candidates better incentives.

3. Computer education should also be introduced gradually right from the elementary stage in education.

4. Introduce one medium of instruction. In the international environment of competition today, English has assumed unprecedented importance.

5. English has to be given preference if a choice is to be made

6. Various bodies of academic experts should also be formed to monitor, standardize and develop all the above mentioned programmes.

7. Use electronic media more extensively for educational purposes. A channel could be devoted to just education.

8. Give more importance to language education and mathematics at the primary and secondary levels.
Language and mathematics are the foundation on which acquisition of other skills depends.

Education is the main vehicle for socio-economic development but, unfortunately about half of adult population in Pakistan cannot read and write. Pakistan is sixth most populus country of the world. Due to rapid population growth and inability of
the formal education system to bring all children into school, illetrate polulation has increased from 22 million in 1961 to 48 million by 2005. It is feared that by 2015, illetrate population in Pakistan may rise to 52 million.

In the area of education, Pakistan is lagging behind other countries of South Asia, even lower than Nepal, Bangladesh and Maldives. Pakistan has been spending less on education as copmared to other countries in the region.

PROBLEMS

A. Inappropriateness of curricula and pedagogy

The curricula and related pedagogy are usually inappropriate or at least inadequate for the set goals in many disciplines.

Furthermore, there is no integrated system in which one step leads to the next to enable a student to develop a truly sound base for the discipline he or she is interested in. Moreover, even at the higher levels of education, there is no mechanism
worth its name to help a student in gauging his or her potential or in deciding on a suitable academic career.

B. Multiplicity of educational systems
There are many systems working here, resulting in not synergy but social division and conflict. For example we have English medium schools, Urdu medium schools, and religious madrasas. Students coming out of English medium schools, especially good private sector schools, have little or no awareness of their religion and culture whereas those passing out from Urdu medium schools are usually destined to work in clerical and lower level positions. Religious madrasas churn out yet another class that are usually unaware of the world outside their own and, with their strong sectarian bias and little or no training in modern disciplines, are usually ill-equipped to interact meaningfully with the larger society and are also monumental at times in spreading sectarianism.

As I was stepping out I hesitated a moment 'Should I take the car? Should I ride the bus?', but finally decided to drive.
I kept glancing at my watch, driving hurriedly. ( hurriedly.)
I barely found a parking space, but already I was 5 minutes late for an our appointment.--
Wow ~~ that parking attendant(안내원) said it was 4000 won for one hour.
People...thoughts? Expensive, right?

My friend and her husband had already arrived and were waiting for me.
Anyway, it had been a really long time since I had seen the/her husband. He really likes playing many kinds of sports, but 7 years ago he had a heart attack infarction.

' Northern Riverside Road 2010”: This is the title of the dance performance we saw yesterday.
The art director of the dance performance is my friend's husband's teaching colleague, and she choreographed this dance.
Personally, I thought the dance was very interesting/(fascinating/engaging ). –

The beginning scene was under the sound of speeding motorcars, dancers were rushed from here to there.
In my feeling this acts means running cars, and also symbolizes our contemporaries`s the life.
That's probably why this dance is called "Northern Riverside Road 2010." (A northern riverside road is a highway on the north side of Seoul's Han River.)
Besides, dancers through many kinds of acts ( laughing, jump, pull ..)expressed our contemporaries`s emotional instability.
Eventhough it`s not easy to understand it was still an interesting performance for me.
And besides I felt again living as an artist is not easy, because without passion/ fervor they can not create new creation.
After watching dancing the show, we had a walk, there were so many kinds of live performances― for example ― display stand, a stallholder, mariachi, ..etc. the road was filled with fervor of life.
So I guessed those were well-matched that street.
WE entered in a cafe ordered draft beer and light refreshments.
So we had talked together had been a pleasure time.
Oh, I `d better express thanks to my friend`s two daughters,
The truth is this, my friend`s husband bought those tickets for his family, but their daughters were too busy to see the show.
Therefore he invited us instead of their daughters, we had a good time.

어제 저녁 나는 친한 친구와 약속이 있었습니다. 오후4:30, 대학로에서 만나기로 했거든요.
만약 그곳에 차를 가져 갈 경우는 주차비도 비쌀뿐더러, 주차할 장소를 찾기가 쉽지가 않습니다.
그러니 당연히 버스를 이용함이 가장 편한 것은 알고 있었지만, 제가 꾸물대다가 그만 시간이 늦어지게 되었습니다. 그래서 출발 전 ‘차를 가져 갈까? 버스를 타고 갈까? ‘잠깐 망설였지만 결국 차를 가지고 나섰습니다. 연신 손목 시계를 흘낏 거리며 달려가 간신히 주차할 곳을 찾았을 때는 약속 시간에서 이미 5분이 지나 있었습니다.
看着表急着开车去，好不容易找到停车位子的时候已经从约时间超过了5分钟。
와~ 그 주차장 할아버지께서 ‘1시간에 4000원’이라고 하셨어요. 여러분 생각에는 비싼 것 같지 않아요? 하지만 비싸도 어쩔 수 없죠, 서둘러 차를 세운 뒤 허겁지겁 약속한 극장으로 달려갔습니다.
아휴~~ 어떡해요? 민망해라! 내 친구와 친구 남편이 이미 와서 기다리고 있었습니다.
어찌 되었던 간에 그 친구 남편과는 정말 정말 오랜만에 보는군요.
남편 친구는 모든 운동을 정말 좋아하는데 7년 전에 심근경색으로 하마터면 저 세상 사람이 될 뻔했었는데, 천만다행으로 위기를 넘기고 새 생명을 얻었으니, 이럴 때는 운이 좋다고 해야겠지요?

잠시 후 또 다른 한 친구가 오고 우리 4명은 극장으로 들어갔습니다.
하하~~ 여러분 알아 맞혀 보세요. 친구 남편이 우리를 만나자 던진 첫마디가 뭔지 아세요?
"아이고~~ 아니 어떻게 두 분은 점점 예뻐지십니까?"
하하~~재미있어요. 점점 예뻐진다고요? 하하~여러분은 믿으시겠어요?~~
아마도 점점 더 나이 들어가는 거겠지요? 하하하~~
아니면, 그 친구 남편의 눈이 점점 나빠지고 있던지 ~~~

" 강변북로2010"‘:이것은 바로 어제 본 그 무용극의 제목입니다.
이 무용극의 예술 감독이 바로 어제 무용공연을 보여준 친구 남편의 학교 동료교사입니다. 또한 그가 이 영화의 안무를 했고요.
난 개인적으로 이 무용이 참 흥미로왔습니다.
힘차게 달리는 자동차의 소리와 함께, 달리는 고속도로를 연상하는 조명 아래로 각각의 무용수가 무대 이쪽에서 저쪽으로 날듯이 힘차게 달려가는 동작으로 무용이 시작 되었습니다.
제 느낌으로는 이는 달리는 자동차를 상징하고, 다시 말하면 바로 허둥지둥 바삐 살아가고 있는 현대 사회인의 모습과 태도를 비유한 게 아닌가 싶습니다.
그래서 아마도 이 무용극 제목을 '강변북로 2010'이라고 했겠죠?.(강변북로는 서울의 한강 북쪽의 자동차 전용 도로입니다.) 그리고 또한 각각의 정서적인 불안 증세를 표현한 (일종의 틱 현상을 지닌 모습), 웃거나, 뛰거나, 옷을 당기거나 하는 등의 다양한 모습을 표현 했습니다.
비록 조금 난해 하긴 했지만, 무척 흥미로웠습니다.
또한 정말 한사람의 예술가로서 살아감이 쉽지 않음을 느꼈습니다.
열정 없는 새로운 창조는 존재할 수 없을 테니까요.

우리는 공연이 끝난 다음, 거리로 나와 걸었습니다. 길거리는 매우 시끌벅적했습니다.。
극장밖에서 본 것들도 적지 않습니다.
길거리 예술가의 공연, 좌판에서 파는 각종의 물건들, 간식거리를 파는 리어카들, 등등....
이 '대학로'라는 거리 이름과 걸맞았습니다.　
우리는 까페로 들어가 생맥주와 간단한 음식를 시켜서 먹으며 즐겁게 이야기를 나눴습니다.

참! 맞습니다! 내 친구의 딸들에게 감사를 표해야겠군요.
원래는 친구 남편이 가족과 공연을 보려고 표를 샀는데, 딸들이 시간이 맞지 않아, 딸 대신 아내 대학친구인 우리를 초청한 것입니다.
결과적으로 우리 4명은 아주 즐거운 시간을 함께 했습니다

Hi everybody, How are you? Today is Saturday.
And finally, Chuseok(KOrean traiditional Holiday) is over, right?

On Chuseok that day, I went to my husband`s oldest brother`s house and had a ancestor-memorial services with my husband`s 5 brothers`s familes.
Then in the late afternoon I went to my parents `s house with my husband.(and took my 2 dogs named 'Betty'and 'Zzang-A')
My sister`s family came at the same time. (and brought her 1 dog, named Konan')
So we had a dinner with my mom and dad together.
Then where were my two brothers`s families ?
Haha ~~They also had to go to see their wife`s parents.
Don`t you think so? So it`s fair. Fair’s fair! !) ((((^__^)))
Wife`s parents are called ‘ parents-in-law’ right?
Fair’s fair?
•When celebrating a Korean holiday, usually, in the morning the wife visits husband's family and celebrates ancestor-memorial services with with her in-laws(family of husband), then in the late afternoon the husband visits to his wife´s old home see wife`s parents (parents-in-law)with wife.
How is it? Does it seem fair?
•After I returned to my house, yesterday I went to bed very early, and had a very deep sleep.
This morning when I got up I felt very clear.
Probably during these days I had been a lack of sleep.
Anyway when I ate brunch, the blue and clean sky was seen through the window.
Wow ~~ How Clean! How Nice! How Beautiful IT IS!
We decided to go out, so I carried inline-skates on my back and took Betty and Zzang-a with my husband.
How beautiful, how precious the fresh air!
Even though the sunlight dazzled my eyes a tittle, the air was so clean and fresh, it made me feel so refreshed in mind and body.
The weather Like today, it has been a long time, really.
Wa ~~~ ~~~~ When I raised my head and looked at sky, there were white fleecy clouds, it looked like a fairy-tale world, it was a distinctive[romantic] atmosphere.
My husband had walked along the river with Betty, and I had inline-skated with Zzang-A.
Why?
Because Betty is old so walking is better for her, on the other hand Zzang-a is a young dog, of course he prefers running and jumping over walking.

모두 안녕하세요?
오늘은 토요일입니다. 마침내 추석은 끝났고요.
추석날엔 큰집(남편 큰 형님 댁)에 가서 다섯분 형님 가족과 함께 차례를 지내고, 저녁에는 친정(아내의 부모님 집)에 갔습니다.
마침 여동생 가족도 와서 엄마 아버지와 함께 저녁을 먹었습니다.
하ㅏㅎ~~ 그러면 남동생 가족은 어디에 갔느냐고요? 하하~~네, 그렇습니다!남동생들도 처갓집에 가야지요. 하하하~~서로 공평해야지요^^!!
아내의 친정 집을 ‘처갓집’이라고 하지요?

이렇게 하면 공평한가요? 아내와 남편이 명절을 보낼때 말이지요.
일반적으로 오전에는 아내가 남편과 시댁에서 차례를 지내고, 오후에는 남편이 아내를 따라 처갓집에 가서 장인 장모를 뵈면，공평하지 않겠어요?

이렇게 저는 그저께 친정에서 하룻밤을 자고 집으로 돌아 와서 어제는 일찍 잠자리에 들었답니다.
오늘 아침 일어나니 아주 오랫동안 잠을 잔 듯한 느낌이었습니다.
깊은 잠을 자고 났더니 오랫만에 몸과 마음이 개운했습니다.
아마도 요 며칠간 잠을 제대로 못 잤기 때문인지 어제는 아주 숙면을 한 듯 합니다.

어찌 되었든, 오늘 아침에 식사 후 창 밖을 보니 와~~~~!!! 날씨가 얼마나 좋은지!
즉시 밖으로 나가 산책을 하기로 했답니다.
나는 오랜만에 인라인을 메고 남편과 베티&짱이를 데리고 문을 나섰답니다.
공기가 얼마나 좋은지! 너무나도 깨끗하고 너무나 아름다왔습니다!
비록 햇살에 눈이 좀 부셨지만, 공기가 정말 맑고 깨끗하여 상쾌하기 그지 없었습니다.
이런 날씨는 정말 오랜만이었습니다.
와~~~~ 고개를 들어 하늘을 보니 파아란 하늘에 흰 구름이 마치 동화 속 이야기의 배경 마냥 낭만적인 분위기였습니다.
남편은 베티를 데리고 내 (안양천) 를 따라 걷고, 나는 인라인을 탄 채로 짱아를 데리고 달렸습니다.
왜냐하면 베티는 이제 나이가 들어서 아무래도 걷는 것이 더 편합니다.
그러면, 짱아는요?
아~~~짱아는요~~ ^o^/ 아직 어리잖아요.^.^/ 역시 달리고 뛰는 것을 훨씬 더 좋아합니다.
그러니 당연히 인라인 타는 나를 따라 달리는 것을 훨씬 더 좋아 하겠지요?
