Often, of an evening, I will settle down in an arm-chair in my club, to read the paper. Scarecely has John seen me, when he will draw up his chair beside mine, and begin a conversation in this way: "I may be right, or I may be wrong," he will say, "but there is one thing that I must admit, and it is that I think that Mary must be the prettiest girl in the world. Neverhave I known a woman like her. What! You have never met her? It surprises me to think that a person of her charms can be unknown to anyone. You must meet her. So must all the other members of the club. I am going to tell you something about her, if I may."

Seldom will he spare me this ordeal of listning to him. Nor will he take a hint. I can snub him, of course. But usually, I have not the heart to. Sometimes I go to the length of saying, "Look here, old man, I had rather read. So run off and play,there's a good chap!" But it is useless to try and get rid of him. Never has there beena man as thick-skinned as he.
Why will heharp on the subject of that woman? There really seems to be no way of stopping him. Need he really talk so much about her? Must that be the price we have to pay for his otherwise very charming company. He should remember that there is a limit to the privileges of friendship; and that friends should not turn themselves into interminable bores. There ought to be a law agaist it! Personally, if I am to sit and listen to him all day, then there is only one thing for me to do, though I had rather not. I must change my club. After all, I am not interested in the woman. Still less am I in love with her. They say that love is blind. I suppose it is true that it is. And I have good reason, also, to feel that it is a pity that it cannot be dumb as well! Of course, I dare not say all this to his face. Naturally, I must not do anything to hurt his feelings. In any case, I had rather not. It is notorious that everybody is complaining about him. Seldom, howerever, will he take any notice of the complaints. He will talk on and on, for hours on end, about her; and he will not stop, in spite of the broadest hints. He had better be careful. If not, he may lose all his best friends. There is a limit to human endurance, and he cannot expect people to put up with that kind of thing or ever. Why, indeed, should they? He ought to know by now that they will not stand it, and that they had sooner lose his friendship. And a man should not risk alienating his friends. Least of all dare he risk isolating himself altogether. Friends can be very useful, on occasion. I think that I had better tell him, as a friend, that he ought to have mercy on us, and that he should keep his rhapsodies to himself. I had sooner not say all this to him, of course. But I feel that these intimate private emotions should not be blazoned forth in public. Even if one is in love, one need not shout it to the skies. Under no circumstances should one wear one's heart on one's sleeve. It is simply not done. And I am sure he can exercise a little self-restraint, if he wants to.

By creating this character, Doyle made an ancestor of modern forensic science and analytical chemistry; the writer also gave an official birth to the detective genre as we know it.
The first story, A Study in Scarlet, appeared in Beeton's Christmas Annual in 1887 and the second, The Sign of the Four, in Lippincott's Monthly Magazine three years later. The character grew tremendously in popularity with the beginning of the first series of short stories in Strand Magazine in 1891; further series of short stories and two novels published in serial form appeared between then and 1927. The stories cover a period from around 1880 up to 1914. In 1893, with the purpose of dedicating his time to his more important historical novels, Conan Doyle tried to get rid of the character of Sherlock Holmes in the story entitled The Last Problem: there the writer introduced an archenemy, Professor Moriarty, who killed Holmes; while fighting, the two fell down the Reichenbach Falls in Switzerland. Public outcry, however, led Doyle first to write The Hound of the Baskervilles (1901), the story of which was set before the tragic accident; then to write The Adventure of the Empty House, where it was explained that only Moriarty had fallen, but since Holmes had other dangerous enemies he had preferred to also be temporarily "dead".
Sherlock Holmes stories have been translated into more than fifty languages, and made into plays, films, radio and television series, a musical comedy, a ballet, cartoons, comic books, and advertisement.

In a 1927 Fox newsreel Conan Doyle explained: “In the old-fashioned detective stories, the detective always seems to get to his results either by some sort of lucky chance or without giving an explanation on how: it seemed to me that he is bound to give his reasons, why he came to this conclusions.” So he began to think of turning scientific methods onto the work of detection and took inspiration from the method of diagnosis used by one of his professors at university: Joseph Bell (1837-1911), who “wouldn’t do these things by chance; he would get the thing by building it up, scientifically”. Conan Doyle wrote to him, "It is most certainly to you that I owe Sherlock Holmes. ... Round the centre of deduction and inference and observation which I have heard you inculcate I have tried to build up a man.” Sherlock Holmes was also modeled after Sergeant Cuff, a character by Wilkie Collins, and Auguste Dupin by Edgar Allan Poe.

Probably the best-known sleuth in the world, Sherlock Holmes is a fictional character who was featured in four novels and 56 short stories. Holmes works as a consulting detective: people ask for his help to solve difficult or rather strange cases. He does so by using various innovative techniques such as forensic science and disguise.
Sherlock Holmes is a charismatic and extravagant man. Although messy, Holmes manages to locate documents and papers among the chaos of his disorganised office; famed for smoking a pipe he is also described as smoking cigars and cigarettes, and occasionally uses addictive drugs. Holmes is also a good fighter and swordsman and plays the violin well. His master use of deductive reasoning for solving mysteries is based on his notional knowledge of specific fields: especially Chemistry, Anatomy, Sensational Literature and British Law, but also Botany and Geology.
All but four Sherlock Holmes’ stories are narrated by his faithful friend Doctor Watson. They were first introduced by a common friend while looking for cheap lodgings for rent and ended up sharing rooms at the famous 221B of Baker Street. John H. Watson became a kind of biographer of Holmes’ exploits. Later, the doctor got married but kept visiting Holmes’ flat; after his wife’s death, Watson decided to return to Baker Street.

Scientists in Bonn have developed a method of listening to sounds from plants normally inaudible to the human ear. The basic technique was developed in the Netherlands, but the German equipment is more sensitive. When a leaf or stem is sliced, the plant signals pain or dismay by releasing the gas ethylene over its entire surface. The gas molecules are collected in a bell jar and bombarded with laser beams, which makes them vibrate. The resultant sound waves are amplified in a resonance tube, and detected with a sensitive microphone. The longer a plant is subjected to stress, the louder the signal.
One surprising result came from an apparently healthy cucumber that was virtually shouting with agony. A closer study showed it has developed mildew, a harmful fungus, though the symptoms were not apparent. Listening to plants in this way could be of great benefit to farmers as an early-warning system to detect pests and disease, and as an aid to efficient storing and transporting. Apples, for instance, give off high levels of ethylene, increasing with ripeness and causing neighbouring fruit to rot. Invisible differences of ripeness may be detected acoustically, enabling fruit to be separated into batches in order to prolong its freshness.

I think egg and bread crumbs are used.
I've never actually made it myself, I am way to lazy to make pasta from scratch.
I just buy my noodles dry and premade. :)
