This document is a photograph taken by Nick Ut in 1972, during the Vietnam War.
It is entitled « Napalm Girl » or « The Terror of war ».

In the middle of the picture, we can see a girl, probably aged around 10. She is naked, in the middle of the road with her arms open. She is crying and she looks terrified.
Around the girl there are other children who are crying and running. Behind the children, 3 soldiers are following.
In the foreground , there is some dark smoke.

We can easily imagine that the children are trying to escape because a bomb exploded.
They are crying probably because they are really scared or hurt.
We can suppose that the soldiers are protecting the children, or on the contrary that they are chasing them.

In fact, the title of the picture « Napalm girl» helps us understand the situation : the little girl was certainly burnt by napalm, that’s why she is naked and she seems to suffer .

I guess the photographer wanted to denounce the violence of the war and put people face to face with the victims. The focus of the picture is on the little girl and it makes the viewer feel uncomfortable.

To me, this picture is shocking because it is violent and it shows that the victims of the Vietnam war were not only soldiers. Wars end in many people’s death, including innocent people.

Thanks to photographers like Nick Ut, people realized the atrocities of the Vietnam War and they protested to end it. The US troops left Vietnam in 1973.

Hello I’m Mary and I’m a student in Windsor High School.

Let me tell you about the rules in the school.

It’s not very strict, but you can’t eat chewing gum in the school, and you mustn’t use your mobile.
You can run outside in the playground but you mustn’t run in the corridor because it’s dangerous! You must walk quietly! You can’t chat in class because it’s not respectful, and you mustn’t fight of course!
You can take part in a club, and you must do your best!

My name is David, I go to St Andrew high school and I’m in Year 8.

St Andrew high school is not very big: there are 20 classrooms. For example, there are 10 regular (or basic?) classrooms, there is just one Science lab and one ICT classroom with 15 computers.
There isn’t a music classroom. The school library is big, there are hundreds of books! The dining hall or cafeteria is small, but the drama hall is large. There is a sport pitch but there isn’t a gymnasium.
My favourite place is the playground because this is where I play with my friends.

At the tender age of six, Ruby Bridges advanced the cause of civil rights in November 1960 when she became the first African American student to integrate an elementary school in the South.

Born on September 8, 1954, Bridges was the oldest of five children for Lucille and Abon Briges, farmers in Tylertown, Mississippi. When Ruby was two years old, her parents moved their family to New Orleans, Louisiana in search of better work opportunities. Ruby's birth coincided with the U.S Supreme Court's landmark ruling in Brown v. Board of Education of Topeka Kansas, which ended racial segregation in public schools.

Nonetheless, southern states resisted integration, and in 1959, Ruby attended a segregated school in New Orleans. Ruby and her mother were escorted by four federal marshals to the school every day that year.

A lifelong activist for racial equality, in 1999, Ruby established the Ruby Bridges Foundation to promote tolerance and create change through education.
