Saint Andrew's Day

Patron Saint
On 30 November, Scottish people celebrate St. Andrew's Day, the patron saint of Scotland. He was one of the Twelve Apostles and brother of Simon Peter (Saint Peter). He was a fisherman who lived in Galilee (Israel).

Scotland
Scotland is located in the north of Great Britain. It consists of two main parts: The Highlands and The Lowlands, surrounded by small islands.

Cities
The main cities of this country are: Edinburgh (the capital), Glasgow, Aberdeen and Dundee.

Flag
People think that St. Andrew died on a diagonally transverse cross, St. Andrew's cross, also called Saltire. It is said to be one of the oldest national flags of any country, dating back at least to the 12th century.

Emblem
The national emblem is the thistle, a purple flower. According to legend, an army of Vikings tried to conquer a party of sleeping Scots but one of the Vikings stood on a thistle and yelled in pain, awaking the Scots, who won the battle.

Language
Although Scottish people speak English, they also speak Scottish Gaelic. It’s a Celtic language native to Scotland.

Music
The national instrument of Scotland is the bagpipe and it is best represented in the music of the Scottish Highlands. Every August pipers from around the world gather in Glasgow for the world championships.

Clothes
Scots often wear kilts. A kilt is a woolen skirt with a checked pattern called tartan. Each clan (Scottish word for family or tribe) has its own special tartan. Men wear a leather money bag called a “sporran” with the kilt.

Food
On special occasions, Scots eat haggis. It’s lamb, heart, liver and animal fat boiled inside a sheep’s stomach.

Drinks
Scottish traditional drink is whiskey, which means “the water of life” in Gaelic language.

Games
Scots enjoy the Highland Games. They’re competitions for Scottish dancing and sports such as tossing the caber (a 5-metre long piece of wood) or throwing the hammer.

Golf
It’s the national sport and it dates back to 15th century in Scotland.

Famous Scots
Sir William Wallace was a Scottish patriot who led resistance against the English and briefly gained control of Scotland in 1298.
Robert Burns (25 January 1759-1796) was a Scottish poet. His most famous poem is “Auld Lang Syne”. It’s sung at midnight on New Year’s Eve (Hogmanay). On Burn’s birthday every year people have parties, eat haggis, drink whiskey, dance to bagpipe music and read his poems.
Sir Walter Scott (1771-1832) was a Scottish historical novelist, playwright and poet. Famous titles include Ivanhoe, Rob Roy or The Lady of the Lake.

Hi, my name is Michael Scott, I’m a 25 years old Canadian, I grew up in Vancouver but I was actually born on the 7th of December 1989 in Seattle in the US, right on the other side of the boarder!
If I had to describe my personality, I would say that I’m quite introvert but definitely loyal to the few friends I have. I love to go hiking with them in the mountains nearby. I also enjoy taking long walks alone in the forest. It gives me some time to think about what I want to do in life after I’m done studying mathematics.
I have indoor activities too as Winter can be quite long and cold here. So, when it’s freezing outside, I spend a lot of time in my room with my friends playing computer games. We actually formed a team to play Counter Strike. When the four of us are tired of playing on the computer we go train our ping pong skills in the garage.
However, most of my time is taken by my studies at the university. I still don’t know what I will do with my degree but hopefully I will find a job in the tech industry… I find this field very attractive because it allows you to work on your own on fascinating projects. Plus, it’s the kind of industry where you can really make a difference; and this suits my personal quote perfectly: “everyone can make a difference”.

Hi, my name is Amit Thompson. I am 16 years old. I was born in Sheffield in England but I grew up in London. We moved there when I was 2. My dad is English but my mum is of Indian origin. That’s why I have a British surname and an Indian first name. We actually went to Mumbai in India for the very first time this summer to visit my mother’s side of the family. That was an amazing experience! I go to Kingsbury High school where I’m enrolled in tons of extra-curricular activities. For instance, I’m part of the archery team and the chess club. I actually won the school tournament last year, and I was very proud because some of the players were quite talented. I must say I am a tech addict. My sister calls me a geek because I have volunteered to help other pupils in the computer lab of our school two hours a week. I have 3 really good friends and we spend most of our free time together testing new programs on our computers or playing video games online. I don’t play any instruments, but I create my own music on my computer. I’m really into rock music right now and I’ve come up with pretty good stuff. I’m also a huge fan of sci-fi movies such as the Star Wars saga and The Hunger Games. And I’m crazy about the series Star Trek and so is my dad, so we watch the episodes over and over again at weekends. We know all the lines by heart. So, sometimes we turn down the volume and we act as the characters of the series. We really have a blast then!

Dear Garret,
I arrived in Galway 6 days ago. I stayed at my uncle’s. It was great because I had fun with my cousins. My uncle took us to the Celtic festival, it was amazing. I just loooved it! We saw different Irish bands, it was so fantastic, I even bought a CD. Can you believe it?
Tomorrow I’m going back home. It was a wonderful experience.

My favourite school club is the Dance company because I love dancing and I enjoy music but I can't bear the Yoga club because I am not very flexible.
