Eiffel Tower

Introduction
Standing high above Paris, France, the Eiffel Tower is among the most famous landmarks in the world. Known as the Tour Eiffel in French, the tower was designed and built by the French engineer Gustave Eiffel, who also designed the framework for the Statue of Liberty in New York. When built in the 1880s, it was the highest man-made structure in the world. Today, it is still the tallest structure in Paris.

The monument
The three-level tower is 300 metres (984 feet) tall. A television antenna atop the structure gives it a total height of 322 metres (1,056 feet). The base of the tower consists of four semicircular arches. Glass-walled elevators and stairs lead up to the first and second platforms. Other elevators go from the second level to the third platform near the top. From this platform the view extends for 80 kilometres (50 miles) on a clear day. Along with the viewing areas, the tower has restaurants, a museum and a souvenir shop.

History
The Eiffel Tower is the result of a contest held by the French government. At the time the government was organising the International Exposition of 1889, a fair to celebrate the 100-year anniversary of the start of the French Revolution. The contest to create a monument for the event drew much interest, and more than 100 plans were submitted. Eiffel’s plan was chosen but not without some controversy. His plan called for a tower built almost entirely of a series of crossed metal strips. The structure was widely criticised in the planning stages because nothing like it had ever been built before. Yet the tower was built with a small labour force and at a slight cost. It took only about two years, between 1887 and 1889.

After the 1889 fair ended, the Eiffel Tower was almost torn down several times. But Eiffel oversaw changes to the structure that made it more useful. Among them were the additions of a weather station in 1890 and a military telegraph station in 1903. Changes also were made for fairs held in 1900, 1925 and 1937. In the early 1980s the Eiffel Tower was renovated for its 100-year anniversary in 1989. The tower is now a popular tourist stop.

Santa Claus

Santa Claus is a legendary figure who is said to bring gifts to children during the Christmas season. In the United States he is also known as Kriss Kringle. The character is known by several other names as well, including Father Christmas in Britain and Père Noël in France.

According to the stories about him, Santa Claus lives at the North Pole with his wife, Mrs. Claus. Throughout the year Santa and his elves make toys for Christmas. They also watch over children to see if they have been good or bad. On Christmas Eve Santa travels all over the world on a sleigh pulled by reindeer and delivers toys to each child’s house.

Santa Claus is based on Saint Nicholas. Nicholas was a real person who lived in the AD 300s. People loved him because of his many acts of kindness. Because of the many stories about his kindness Saint Nicholas became associated with gift giving. In some European countries children received gifts on his feast day, which was in December. Other countries had similar traditions of children receiving presents around Christmas. Europeans brought these traditions with them when they settled the American colonies. The Dutch in particular are said to have brought the story of Saint Nicholas. The name Santa Claus came from the Dutch word for Saint Nicholas, Sinterklaas.

The image of Santa that people know today developed in the 1800s. In 1822 Clement C. Moore wrote a poem called A Visit from Saint Nicholas. This poem is better known as ‘Twas the Night Before Christmas. It describes a chubby, jolly, rosy-cheeked old man with a white beard. He flies through the air in his sleigh pulled by eight reindeer. He climbs down chimneys and leaves gifts for children. In 1863 a U.S. cartoonist named Thomas Nast began drawing pictures of Santa Claus based on Moore’s poem. Nast gave Santa his red suit with white fur trim.

In 1939 Santa gained a ninth reindeer, Rudolph, in a book that the Montgomery Ward department store gave to children. Rudolph begins the story as an outcast because of his shiny nose. But he ends up a hero when he leads Santa’s sleigh on a foggy Christmas Eve.

Henry divorced Catherine of Aragon in 1533. His second wife Anne Boleyn was accused of adultery and she was beheaded in 1536. Jane Seymour gave Henry a son in 1537 but she died when she had the baby. Henry didn't like his fourth wife, Anne of Cleves, so he divorced her in 1546. His fifth wife Catherine Howard was accused of adultery, so she was beheaded in 1542. His sixth wife was Catherine Parr, Henry died before her.

I went to a museum last weekend - The Guggenheim Museum. I saw some interesting art and then ate lunch with friends in Central Park. It was fun.
And of course, you must visit Broadway! It’s a famous street with lots of theatres on it. My family and I had tickets to see Hamilton last month - it was amazing!
What else? Yesterday I went across Brooklyn Bridge. The views of Manhattan skyscrapers from Brooklyn are awesome. I saw the iconic One
World Trade Centre and the Empire State Building. And of course, I saw liberty island and the Statue of Liberty from the bridge - it’s a great place to visit.
If you still have time, I recommend a visit to Ellis Island. I went with my children last summer. We took a boat from Battery Park and on the island we did a tour. It was really interesting.

In London, You can visit a lot of fantastic monuments. My favourite monument is Buckingham Palace but you can also see Tower of London, Tower Bridge and Big Ben of course!
You can go to the theatre, you can visit interesting museums. You can relax in parks .
But Don't forget your umbrella because it is often raining in London.
