Dustin Hoffman was born on 8 August 1937 in Los Angeles. At the age of 19, he wanted to
become a stage actor, so he left university. And at 20, he went to New York City, to start a
career as an actor. While he was in New York he did a lot of different jobs to pay for his acting
lessons. For about ten years, he did TV commercials and had small TV roles.
In 1966 at the age of 29, he went back to Los Angeles, because he was selected for an audition
in the movie The Graduate, to play the leading role.
While he was auditioning for the role, he felt that he wasn’t very good, so after the shooting, he
was impatient to get back to New York City.
Back in New York he was asked by his agent to call Mike Nichols, the film director of The
Graduate. On the phone, he heard the most beautiful words an actor can hear: “Well, you got
it!!!!” He was given the leading role!
The film changed his life forever, because in 1968 it was one of the biggest successes in the
history of movies. A star was born!
