I'm a 40year old american and have NEVER heard the phrase "In the soup". Did you get it out of a textbook?

I changed "I am" to "I'm" and "he is" to "he's" because people always speak using contractions. If you say "I am" or "he is" it sounds like a robot.
Most of the expressions are very old-fashioned. Maybe from the 1950's!
