The British Isles are a group of islands situated off the north-west coast of Europe.
The seas that surround the British Isles are: the North Atlantic Ocean to the west and north-west; the North Sea, which touches the east coast; the English Channel, which separates Britain from the Continent.
The two largest islands are Great Britain and Ireland. They are separated by the Irish Sea. Great Britain includes the regions of England, Scotland and Wales.
Ireland is situated to the west of Britain and is divided into two parts. The main part of the island is the Republic of Ireland (Eire in Irish), which became independent from Britain in 1922. The north-eastern part of the island , called Northern Ireland (or Ulster), together with Great Britain forms the United Kingdom.
