Science today has become amazingly advanced. Millions of lives are saved by new scientific methods today. Artists, on the other hand, have played important roles in society for centuries in human history. Which type of contribution can we say is valued more by society today?
Art has been a necessary for centuries. It has been essential for humans since the beginning of our creation. Whether they be paintings, music, or theater, forms of art have been found in many important cultures all over the world throughout history. Today, forms of art have been used for social events. Photographers use their photos to inform the world about extreme poverty in different parts of the world. Concerts are held as fund raisers for causes such as AIDS, or as a campaign to protest against war. Art is an important means to inform others about causes and problems the world holds today.
Science, however, does not contribute to such positive events for the world. Some might say that it does contribute to solving problems around the world, as the development of science saves lives and cores illness. However, think about it this way; what caused the invention of nuclear bombs that made this world a fearful place for all humans to live in? What caused dreadful inventions such as arms and tanks, to develop so that human beings can kill each other? The answer to both questions is science. Regarding this, can we really say that scientists contribute to society?
Art is worldwide: anyone of any cultural background can understand and enjoy art. Neither language nor cultural differences create walls to distract one from enjoying art.
In the last scene of the famous movie Titanic, musicians continue playing music even while the ship continues to sink, meaning they would all die sooner or later. Music gives us hope, and keeps us positive in our stressful lives we live today, I think that these are the most important things in society today; to give people hope, and to inform others about the problems the world holds today. Therefore I think that contribution of artists more valued by society.
